The Munk Family of Großwardein in 1868/69

The photo depicts the mother, Mrs. Adolfne Munk née Sara Stein with her four children: Tini, Bernát, Gábor és Hermina, and Sara’s half-sister, Cili Stein. Sara’s son from her first marriage, Gedeon, is not on the picture; he was 11 years old at this time. He was merely three days old when his father was swept away by flooding waters. At the end of the lactation period, Sara re-married, and her son was raised by his father’s family. Through becoming widowed and getting remarried, the notion of the mosaic family was not unknown in the family. Sara’s half-sister, Mari, lived with the family before her own marriage, and after she lost her husband until she re-married.
