A képes levelezőlapok elterjedésének időszakában viszonylag hamar megjelentek a zsidó közönséget ellátó kiadók. A képeslapírás fénykorával (1890–1918 k.) nagyjából egy időben jelentős európai zsidó tömegek vándoroltak nyugat felé és az Egyesült Államokba, így a képeslap a kivándoroltak és az otthon maradottak kapcsolattartó eszközeként is elterjedt. A képeslapokon közölt illusztrációk új társadalmi szerepeket mutattak az óhazában maradottaknak. A new yorki Hebrew Publishing Company 96. számú képeslapja a női szerepek tréfás átalakulását mutatja. A divatosan öltözött nők és férfiak kapcsolatának a képeslapon bemutatott három állomása az udvarlás, a menyasszony és vőlegény kapcsolata, valamint a veszekedős házaspár képe. Ez tréfás megfogalmazásban ugyan, de új, szabad választáson és érzelmeken alapuló férfi–nő kapcsolat lehetőségét mutatta a hagyományos közvetített házasságokban élő kelet–európai közösségnek. A képek értelmezését jiddis nyelvű feliratok segítik, s ezek mutatják a képek értelmezésének helyes, azaz a héber és jiddis olvasási iránynak megfelelően jobbról balra történő értelmezését is.

During the period when illustrated postcards became widespread, publishers catering to a Jewish audience emerged relatively quickly. Roughly coinciding with the heyday of postcard writing (c. 1890–1918), large numbers of European Jews emigrated to the West and the United States, and so the postcard also became a means of communication between those who had emigrated and those who remained at home. The illustrations featured on the postcards depicted new social roles for those who had remained in their homeland. Postcard No. 96 from the New York-based Hebrew Publishing Company depicts a humorous transformation of women’s roles. The three stages of the relationship between fashionably dressed women and men shown on the postcard are courtship, the relationship between the bride and groom, and the image of a quarreling married couple. Although presented in a humorous manner, this depicted the possibility of a new, free relationship between men and women—based on free choice and emotions—for the Eastern European community living under the tradition of arranged marriages. Yiddish captions aid in interpreting the images and also indicate the correct reading direction—from right to left, in accordance with the reading conventions of both Hebrew and Yiddish.
