A tisztségre a zsidó közösség egy tagját nevezték ki, ellentétben a korábbi gyakorlattal, amikor a zsidók jogi képviselete egy keresztény főúr feladata volt. A prefektusnak közvetítő szerepe mellett széles körű jogai voltak a zsidó közösségen belül is. A leghíresebb prefektus, Mendel Jakab 1493 és 1522 között töltötte be a tisztséget, gyakorlatilag ő volt a magyarországi zsidó közösség vezetője. Mendel Jakab okleveleket is kiadott, ezeket saját címerével és arcképével ellátott pecsétjével hitelesítette, ami egyedülálló volt a korabeli európai gyakorlatban. A kassai levéltárban őrzött pecsét alapján festette meg Gedő Lipót a prefektus hiteles portréját a Zsidó Múzeum megrendelésére. Elsőként Löw Lipót ismertette a Ben Chananja című folyóiratában, majd Kohn Sámuel hívta fel rá a figyelmet a millenniumi kiállítás kapcsán. Az 1932-ben újranyitott Zsidó Múzeum gyűjtési terveiben is szerepelt; a múzeum vezetősége többször kérte az Andrássy gyűjtemény akkori tulajdonosát, Andrássy Gézát, hogy tegye lehetővé számukra a kard megszerzését. Andrássy 1933-ban jó minőségű fényképeket készíttetett a múzeum számára. 1951-ben, az arisztokrata gyűjtemények államosítását követően a Joint anyagi támogatásával a múzeum végül megvásárolta a kardot. A kard iránti érdeklődés oka a pengéjén található két héber zsoltáridézet: a 113. zsoltár 2. verse és 140. zsoltár 8. versének első fele. A felirat miatt a régebbi kutatások hangsúlyozták, hogy a kard készültekor a magyar zsidók kardot viselhettek, ami meglepő a középkori megszorító rendelkezések szerint élő európai zsidó közösségek életében.
