A módszeres zsidó múzeumi gyűjtés ebben az időszakban indult, ezért a fényképek már nemcsak a tudományos kutatást segítő adattári dokumentumként, hanem a múzeumi gyűjtemény alapjait jelentő muzeális tárgyakként is megjelentek. <br />Múzeumunk alapítása után, 1912-ben Fürst Aladár a Múlt és Jövő hasábjain hívta fel a fényképek gyűjtésének fontosságára a figyelmet, cikkében a „zsidó kultúrtörténeti értékkel bíró tárgyaknak fényképét és leírását”, valamint „régi zsinagógák, templomi szerek, okmányok, zsidó iparművészeti munkák, illusztrációk” fényképeit kérte. <br />A kezdeményezés eredményességét jelzi, hogy a Magyar Zsidó Múzeum 1915-ben megjelent első katalógusában az első tételek között szerepel több mint negyven zsinagóga fényképe, valamint híres zsidók portéi. <br /> <p>Az 1930-as évektől kezdve a zsidó közösséget életének fontosabb eseményeiről készült fényképeket is tudatosan gyűjtötték. Több műtárgy- és műemlékfelmérési projektet indítottak, melynek során lefényképeztették a zsinagógákat, esetenként a közösségek szertartási tárgyait is. 1945 után intézményünk kiemelt feladatává vált a holokauszt dokumentálása. Ennek során rengeteg fényképet is gyűjtöttek, esetenként reprodukciókat.
