A múzeumi gyűjteményeket kiegészítő fényképes adattárak létrehozása a 19. század végére általános muzeológiai gyakorlattá vált. A módszeres zsidó múzeumi gyűjtés ebben az időszakban indult, ezért a zsidó múzeumokban a fényképek már nemcsak a tudományos kutatást segítő adattári dokumentumként, hanem a múzeumi gyűjtemények alapjait jelentő muzeális tárgyakként is megjelentek.&#13;
A pesti Zsidó Múzeum alapítása után, 1912-ben Fürst Aladár a Múlt és Jövő hasábjain hívta fel a fényképek gyűjtésének fontosságára a figyelmet, cikkében a „zsidó kultúrtörténeti értékkel bíró tárgyaknak fényképét és leírását”, valamint „régi zsinagógák, templomi szerek, okmányok, zsidó iparművészeti munkák, illusztrációk” fényképeit kérte. A kezdeményezés eredményességét jelzi, hogy a Magyar Zsidó Múzeum 1915-ben megjelent első katalógusában az első tételek között szerepel több mint negyven zsinagóga fényképe, valamint híres zsidók portéi.&#13;
A Múzeum alapításától alakuló fényképtárunk számára sok vidéki zsinagóga belső teréről ekkor készült először és utoljára fényképfelvétel, nem egy közülük kiemelkedő fotográfiai minőségben.&#13;
A fényképek mára felbecsülhetetlen értékű dokumentációs értéke mellett a korábban csak zsidó szertartási környezetben látható tárgyakat, zsinagógai tereket beemelte a zsidóságról szóló kulturális diskurzus világába. </text>
