Gitl családja eredetileg Kismartonból, a mai Eisenstadtból származott, majd a 18. század elején Bécsbe költöztek. 1758-ban Gitl apja kiváltságlevelet kapott Mária Teréziától. A gazdag család megrendelésére több illusztrált kézirat készült, mert a gazdag zsidó családokban a könyvnyomtatás felfedezése után is szokás maradt a kéziratos, illusztrált luxus–imakönyvek használata. A mindössze huszonhét pergamenlapot tartalmazó kis imakönyvecskében tíz színes festett kép van. A könyvet Mesullam Ziml másolta és illusztrálta Polnán, 1750-51-ben. Neki más gyűjteményekből több műve is ismert, elsősorban bécsi megrendelésekre dolgozott az 1700-as évek első felében. A zsidó vallásban a nőkre három vallási parancsolat teljesítésének kötelessége hárul. A három legfontosabb női teendő a szombati gyertyák meggyújtása, a kenyérsütés során egy kis darabka tészta elégetése a jeruzsálemi szentélyre való megemlékezésként, és a rituális fürdőben való havonkénti megtisztulás. A 18. századi írásmagyarázó, a Vilnai Gaon szerint a három cselekedet kezdőbetűiből a héber „báj” szót kapjuk. Egyebek mellett ennek a három kötelességnek a teljesítése látható az imakönyvecske illusztrációin. Ezek mellett az imakönyv az étkezéshez kapcsolódó áldásokat, az étkezés utáni imát, valamint a purimi és hanukkai imádságokat tartalmazza. A hanukkai ima illusztrációja jellemző a női imakönyvekre. A férfiaknak szánt könyvekben a hanukkai ima mellett a menórát gyújtó férfi alakja szerepel, míg a női könyvekben ezen a helyen Judit látható Holofernes levágott fejével. A hagyomány szerint a gyönyörű Judit sós kecskesajttal, majd borral kínálta Holofernést, majd a lerészegedett férfi fejét levágva Judit megszabadította városát, Betuliát az ellenségtől. Judit alakját a zsidó néphagyományban a hanukkai történetben szereplő Hasmóneus családdal is összekapcsolták.
