A középkorban még egy textildarabbal terítették le a pergament, amit sormutatóként is használtak; tóramutatók használatára a 16. századtól vannak adatok. Legelterjedtebb a kinyújtott mutatóujjú jobb kéz alak, melyet fémből, fából vagy csontból, napjainkban akár üvegből és műanyagokból is készítenek. A tárgy hagyományos elnevezése a héber kéz szó, azaz yad. Európában a feudális tiltó rendelkezések miatt a zsidók általában ki voltak zárva a nemesfémekkel való munkából, így a zsidó szertartási tárgyakat is jellemzően nem zsidó mesterek készítették. Az óbudai közösség kivétel volt: itt speciális engedélyek birtokában működhetett néhány zsidó ötvös is, például Adler Fülöp, aki a feliratokkal díszített tóramutatót készítette. A Zichy grófok birtokán megtelepedett óbudai zsidó közösség az ország – Pozsony után – második legnagyobb és legjelentősebb közössége volt. A zsidó közösségen belüli társadalmi életét a különféle jótékonysági vagy tanuló egyletek határozták meg. Ezekben részt venni, munkájukat anyagilag is segíteni elengedhetetlen volt a közösségen belüli érvényesüléshez. A zsinagógai istentiszteletek során használt tóradíszek és egyéb szertartási tárgyak is magánszemélyek vagy az egyesületek ajándékai voltak. Az ajándékozók neveit és az ajándékozás dátumát feltüntették a tárgyakon, így ezek történeti, családtörténeti, archontológiai kutatásokra is használhatóak. A négyzetes szárú, három lapos kockával tagolt tóramutatót teljesen beborítják a feliratok. A három kockán olvasható felirat szerint a mutatót az óbudai „hevra menuha nehona” azaz léleküdv egylet vezetői készíttették 1837-ben. A mutató szárának négy oldalán a vezetők nevei is olvashatóak, melyek alapján a korabeli zsidó névadási gyakorlat ismeretében családjaik származási helyére is következtethetünk. Beer Boskovitz – vagy családja – minden bizonnyal a morvaországi Boskovice közösségéből, míg Koppel Vacener és Wolf Zsámbék más, kisebb magyarországi közösségekből érkezhetett. A tárgyat először 1935-ben mutatták be a nagyközönségnek, az Iparművészeti Múzeum „Régi Buda és Pest iparművészete” című kiállításán. A tóramutató az Óbudai Zsidó Múzeum gyűjteményéből letétként került a múzeumba 1945 után.
