Magyarországon a 19. század közepén engedélyezték hivatalosan, hogy zsidók letelepedjenek és ingatlant bírhassanak a városokban. A modern nagyvárosi életforma kialakulása új társadalmi problémákat teremtett, melyekre a régi hagyományok adaptálásával új válaszok születtek. Ekkoriban alakultak a zsidó nőegyletek, olyan helyzetek orvoslására, melyek szinte ismeretlenek voltak a tradicionális közösségekben. A nagyvárosokba fiatal emberek, fiatal családok költöztek, anélkül a népes családi háttér nélkül, ami a falusi vagy kisvárosi életben még jellemző volt. Ha ilyen viszonyok között egy nő egyedül maradt, magának kellett a megélhetését biztosítania, gyermekeit felnevelnie. A nőegyletek tevékenységi körét az ilyen gondok alakították: ekkoriban alakultak a zsidó leányárvaházak, az özvegy nők otthonai és a női foglalkoztató műhelyek. A család és anyagi háttér nélküli lányokat a nőegylet adta férjhez, ők adták az önálló háztartás felállítását biztosító kelengyét is. Az anyagi alapok megteremtésében bárki szerepet vállalhatott, a adományok összege többnyire szerény volt, viszont szinte mindenki részt vehetett benne.
