A végén a maradékot betették a zárt hevraperselybe. A zárt perselyek és a nyitott gyűjtőtálak is különféle, a közösség anyagi lehetőségeit is jelző fémekből készültek. Megformáltságuk jellemzően követi az adott korszak tárgykultúráját, de az adomány célját, a gyűjtő szervezet nevét általában héber feliratokkal jelezték. Az emancipáció előtti korszakban, a hátrányos jogi helyzetben lévő közösségekben a különféle jótékonysági egyletek biztosították a zsidó közösségek szegényebb, társadalmilag hátrányos helyzetű tagjainak ellátását. A kiterjedt szociális hálónak mindenki részese: aki megteheti, adományokkal támogathatja a segítő egyletek munkáját, aki rászorult, az pedig ezek segítségével kerülhet olyan helyzetbe, hogy adományozhasson. Az egyik legfontosabb parancsolat a „szaporodjál és sokasodjál”, ezért a házasságok elősegítése elsődleges fontosságú. A szegény lányok méltó kelengyéhez juttatása olyan magasabb célnak minősült már az ókorban is – a foglyok kiváltásához hasonlóan – amiért még a judaizmus legszentebbjét, tóratekercset is el szabad adni. Magyarországon a 19. század közepén engedélyezték hivatalosan, hogy zsidók letelepedjenek és ingatlant bírhassanak a városokban. A modern nagyvárosi életforma kialakulása új társadalmi problémákat teremtett, melyekre a régi hagyományok adaptálásával új válaszok születtek. Ekkoriban alakultak a zsidó nőegyletek, olyan helyzetek orvoslására, melyek szinte ismeretlenek voltak a tradicionális közösségekben. A nagyvárosokba fiatal emberek, fiatal családok költöztek, anélkül a népes családi háttér nélkül, ami a falusi vagy kisvárosi életben még jellemző volt. Ha ilyen viszonyok között egy nő egyedül maradt, magának kellett a megélhetését biztosítania, gyermekeit felnevelnie. A nőegyletek tevékenységi körét az ilyen gondok alakították: ekkoriban alakultak a zsidó leányárvaházak, az özvegy nők otthonai és a női foglalkoztató műhelyek. A család és anyagi háttér nélküli lányokat a nőegylet adta férjhez, ők adták az önálló háztartás felállítását biztosító kelengyét is. Az anyagi alapok megteremtésében bárki szerepet vállalhatott, a adományok összege többnyire szerény volt, viszont szinte mindenki részt vehetett benne.
