Part of the Ottoman Empire until 1917, the Holy Land came under British mandate. At first, the British supported the establishment of a Jewish homeland and authorized Jewish immigration (‘Aliyah’ in Hebrew). In this period several thousand (mostly European) Jews settled in Eretz Israel (Land of Israel) and started a programme of draining marshes and turning the desert into arable land, building a new social and economic model in the Middle East. Arab nationalists looked on this with hostility. In August 1929, part of the Arab population of the Old City attacked the Jewish community, which had been living there for centuries, with knives and sticks. The pogrom spread to other places. Many Jews were killed or forced to flee their own homes. Jewish communities protested world-wide.
