Title A name given to the resource Tóravért Torah shield Description An account of the resource A Mózes öt könyvének héber szövegét, azaz a Tórát tartalmazó pergamentekercset a világ minden zsidó közösségében két farúdra tekercselik. A zsinagógai istentisztelet során minden héten felolvasnak egy-egy hosszabb-rövidebb szakaszt, a hetiszakaszt. A tóra pergamenje ennek megfelelően folyamatosan egyik rúdról a másikra kerül át. Szimhat Tórakor, a Tóra örömünnepén, az éves felolvasási ciklus fordulóján a tekercset rituálisan visszatekerik. Az európai askenáz közösségekben feltekert tekercset rögzítés után díszes tóraköpenybe bújtatják, majd ezen helyezik el a többi, jellemzően nemesfémből készült Tóradíszeket. Ezek használata, készítése nem előírás, pusztán a díszítő szándék és a tóratekercs megbecsülésének szimbólumai, s kialakulásuk az elmúlt néhány száz évre tehető. Időben legkésőbb, csak a tizenhatodik század vége felé alakultak ki a tóravértek vagy pajzsok. Kialakulásuk talán annak köszönhető, hogy a tóravérteken elhelyezett kis nyílásokba helyezett táblácskákon jelezték, hogy melyik hetiszakaszig van betekercselve a pergamen. A táblácskák ma már inkább csak díszek, és általában az aktuális ünnep neve olvasható rajtuk. A tóravértek formája, gyakran még ikonográfiai elemei is követi a többségi társadalomban megszokott formákat: a nemesi címerekre emlékeztető, baldachinos tóravért jellegzetes osztrák-magyar típus. Az aranyozott ezüst tárgy hermelinfarkas mintájú, kettős kőtábla alakú címerpajzs, mely felett kétoldalt elkötött baldachin van. A baldachinon tizenhárom ágú nyitott korona, melynek pántját ékkövek díszítik. A pajzs közepén a tízparancsolat kettős kőtáblái a hajdani Szentély berendezésére utaló oltáron állnak, melynek díszítése angyalfejekből és növényekből áll. A kőtáblák felett csapolás nyoma jelez egy hiányzó koronát, mely szimbolikusan a tóra hatalmát lenne hivatott kifejezni. A kőtáblák két oldalán jobbról Mózes, balról Áron féldomborművű alakja látszik a szokásos attribútumaikkal: Mózes a kőtáblákkal, jobb kezével érintve a táblákat és a szarvakkal, Áron pedig a főpapi mellvérttel és a füstölővel. A második parancsolat szigorú értelmezése miatt a judaizmus kultúrtörténetében az emberábrázolás tilalma enyhébben vagy szigorúbban, de folyamatosan jelen van. A tizennyolcadik századtól számos könyvcímlapon és tóravérten láthatjuk Mózes és Áron páros alakjait. Az itt kiállítottal majdnem teljesen azonos tóravértje volt a korabeli Magyarország legnagyobb zsidó közösségének, a pozsonyinak. Rabbijuk, a korszak egyik legtekintélyesebb rabbija, a Hatam Szóferként is ismert Schreiber Mózes volt. Ő egy 1810-ben kelt rabbinikus döntvényében úgy érvelt, hogy Mózes és Áron alakja megjelenhet tóravérten, mert ábrázolásuk annyira közismert, hogy senki sem tekintheti őket bálványimádás tárgyainak. Ugyanakkor megemlítette, hogy a saját otthonában lévő tárgyakon lévő figurális ábrázolások esetében úgy járt el, amint az mestereitől látta: a figurák orrából, vagy füléből egy kis darabot lecsípett, hogy ne legyenek „teljes ábrázolások”, s használatuk így már kétségen felül megengedett. A Tóravértet a Dohány utcai zsinagógában használták, s az 1930-as években, letétként került a gyűjteménybe.
