Mordeháj szófer sztam, azaz tóra, tfilin és mezuza író szófer volt, aki szakrális pergamenek írásával kereste kenyerét, de számos rézmetszete és illusztrált kézirata is fennmaradt. A papírra nyomtatott megillája rituális célra nem használható, inkább a haszkalapárti, polgárosult zsidó rétegek vásárolhatták. Ez a tekercs három, összeragasztott papírlapból áll, melyre három nyomólemezről készült a szöveg és az illusztráció. A szöveg 11, különböző szélességű oszlopban jelenik meg. A nyomda tulajdonosa, Mose Israel Landau a híres prágai Eliezer Landau rabbi unokája volt, maga is tudós, több lexikográfiai mű szerzője. Landau nagy jelentőséget tulajdonított a héber nyelvnek, és a héber szakrális szövegek lehető legjobb minőségű kiadásának. 1829 és 1831 között megjelentette a Misna, majd 1830 és 1835 között a Talmud valamennyi kötetét. 1833 és 1837 között ő adta ki Moses Mendelsohn modern német nyelvre fordított Bibliáját, a Biurt. Talmud kiadásának vörössel és feketével nyomott címlapján jellegzetes biedermeier díszítés is látható: kupolás-oszlopos pavilonban fügefa áll, alatta talmudidézet, mely a tóratanulást a fügefához hasonlítja: „Mi jellemzi a fügét? Akárhol is érinti meg az ember, talál benne magokat. A Szatmár megyei Nagykároly földesura, Károlyi Sándor 1740–ben ötven telket bocsátott zsidók rendelkezésére a kastélya mellett, hogy megtelepedjenek az elnéptelenedett városban. A közösség szabadon választhatott magának rabbit, de a választást jóvá kellett hagyatniuk a helyi közigazgatás képviselőivel. 1834–ben a nagyhírű talmudtudóst, Perls Mayert hívták meg rabbinak Nagykárolyba, majd egy év múlva megyei főrabbivá is választották. Az utóbbiról művészi gonddal megírt okiratot állítottak ki, melyben felsorolják a rabbi kötelességeit és jogait. Az iratot a megye zsidó közösségeinek képviselői aláírásukkal látták el, s a szerződést a nagykárolyi zsidó közösség jóváhagyása jeléül megpecsételte. A dokumentum másik oldalán magyar nyelven megerősítik, hogy a héber szövegű szerződés Perls Mayer és a megye zsidósága között kötött szerződés, és jelzik, hogy a választáson a zsidó közösségek képviselői mellett részt vettek a megye vezető tisztviselői is. Az iratot ezen az oldalon a megye főszolgabírája írta alá és erősítette meg pecsétjével. Perls Mayer fia, Perls Ármin Pécsett lett neológ rabbi, s jó viszonyt ápolt az Egyenlőség folyóirat főszerkesztőjével, Szabolcsi Miksával, aki 1910-ben a frissen alapított Zsidó Múzeum számára elkérte az értékes dokumentumot. Title A name given to the resource Meghívólevél Description An account of the resource Amikor Wahrmann Israel, a pesti zsidók első rabbija 1824-ben meghalt, közössége nem volt egységes: a modernizáció kihívásaira adott eltérő válaszaik olyannyira eltérőek voltak, hogy sem vallási kérdésekben, sem a közösség jövőjéről szóló elképzeléseikben nem találtak közös hangot. A megfelelő rabbi személyéről sem tudtak dönteni, de hosszas tárgyalások után a közösség vezetői végül Schwab Löw prossnitzi rabbit hívták meg pesti rabbinak. Schwabnak írt héber nyelvű levelükben négy pontban foglalták össze a rabbi kötelességeit. Az Orczy házban ekkor már két hivatalos zsinagógája volt a pesti közösségnek, egy a konzervatívabb, és egy az újításokat igénylő közösségnek. Az irat tanúsága szerint Schwab Löwnek mindkét zsinagógában kellett prédikálnia, a „nagy zsinagógában” jiddisül, a „kultusztemplomban” pedig németül. Schwab lelkes híve volt a zsidók emancipációjának, és a negyvenes években a magyarosodásnak is, olyannyira, hogy nevét Löw helyett magyarosan Arszlánként – mindkettő jelentése oroszlán – használta. A pesti közösség az ő rabbisága idején határozta el a Dohány utcai zsinagóga felépítését, melynek felavatását azonban Schwab Löw már nem érhette meg. Title A name given to the resource Hevra kadisa jegyzőkönyve Description An account of the resource Jóllehet a művészet története bővelkedik az első emberpár ábrázolásában, a szemérmes zsidó vizuális világban ez mégis ritka. A várpalotai hevra kadisa 1837-ben készített jegyzőkönyvének címlapján mégis ezt, a bűnbeesés jelenetét látjuk úgy, ahogyan azt egy dunántúli zsidó közösségben elképzelték. A vizuális megfogalmazásból nyilvánvaló, hogy a rajzoló jól ismerte a tórai szöveget és néhány kommentárt is, de a közép-európai táj is hatással volt rá. A tudás fája nála egyértelműen egy szép piros almákat termő almafa, ennek gyümölcsét láthatjuk Ádám és Éva kezében is, de a felettük összetekeredve jelen lévő kígyó szájában is. Elsőre talán meglepő, hogy Ádám és Éva mennyire hasonlóak, de Ádám a teremtésekor még mindkét nemet képviselte: nő és férfi is volt egyszerre. Hogy mégis ő Ádám, azt a zsidó művészet “folytatólagos előadás”-ként leírt jellegzetességéből is tudhatjuk. Ezek szerint a zsidó vizuális világ nem kimerevített, a bálványimádás veszélyét rejtő jeleneteket ábrázol, hanem szinte rajzfilmszerűen egész történeteket, nem ritkán az isteni beavatkozás történetével együtt. Így olvasva a mi történetünk a lap tetején kezdődik: a kígyó szájában ott a kísértést jelentő gyümölcs, melyet továbbad Évának, aki továbbadja azt Ádámnak - ezért van mindkettejük kezében ott az alma. A történet további része ismert - ezt már nem láthatjuk a képen. Láthatjuk viszont az előzményeket, a paradicsomi állapotokat, amikor a vadállatok (oroszlán), és a legelésző állatok (itt most: szarvas) békésen éltek együtt az Édenkertben. Esetünkben ez nem pusztán a hajdani és a remélt majdani Paradicsomra utal, hanem a jegyzőkönyvet készíttető egylet elöljáróira is: Mose Wolf (farkas) Freudenbergre, és Avraham Hirs (szarvas) Schwarczra. Azt, hogy nem csak a jeles férfiak neveit jelenítette meg a rajzoló, hanem a rajzzal invokálja a Messiás eljövetelét követően remélt harmóniát is, a dátumjelzéshez választott bibliaidézet erősíti.
