A pesti Zsidó Múzeum alapítása után, 1912-ben Fürst Aladár a Múlt és Jövő hasábjain hívta fel a fényképek gyűjtésének fontosságára a figyelmet, cikkében a „zsidó kultúrtörténeti értékkel bíró tárgyaknak fényképét és leírását”, valamint „régi zsinagógák, templomi szerek, okmányok, zsidó iparművészeti munkák, illusztrációk” fényképeit kérte. A kezdeményezés eredményességét jelzi, hogy a Magyar Zsidó Múzeum 1915-ben megjelent első katalógusában az első tételek között szerepel több mint negyven zsinagóga fényképe, valamint híres zsidók portéi. A Múzeum alapításától alakuló fényképtárunk számára sok vidéki zsinagóga belső teréről ekkor készült először és utoljára fényképfelvétel, nem egy közülük kiemelkedő fotográfiai minőségben. A fényképek mára felbecsülhetetlen értékű dokumentációs értéke mellett a korábban csak zsidó szertartási környezetben látható tárgyakat, zsinagógai tereket beemelte a zsidóságról szóló kulturális diskurzus világába. Ekkoriban indult a héber nyelvújító mozgalom, melynek eredményeképpen az évszázadokon keresztül a szakrális szférába visszahúzódó héber nyelv újra beszélt nyelvvé vált. A nemzeti művészeti megteremtésének kísérlete egybeesett az európai szecessziós mozgalmakkal, és elméleti és stíluskérdésekben is nagy hatást gyakorolt rá. A cionista nemzeti művészet kialakítására egy fiatal bevándorló művészekből álló csoport 1906-ban Jeruzsálemben létrehozta a Becalél Művészeti Akadémiát. Az intézet nevét Becalélról, a salamoni szentély építőmesteréről kapta, aki a zsidó művészet első alakja volt, s aki amellett, hogy a kellő mesterségbeli tudása volt, istentől eredő elhivatottsággal is rendelkezett. A Becalél Akadémia megálmodója, szellemi és művészeti vezetője egy bolgár–zsidó szobrász, Boris Schatz volt. Az ő elképzelései szerint alakították ki a részlegeket, melyekben egy-egy kézműves iparág oktatása folyt. Követendő szempont volt, hogy a termékek nyersanyaga helybeli, Izraeli anyag legyen és lehessen háziipari körülmények között is művelni. A Becalélon a szecessziós összművészet (azaz Gesamtkunstwerk) jegyében az új zsidó életforma minden szükséges tárgyát igyekeztek művészi kivitelben megtervezni és előállítani. Az előállított termékek jelentős része hétköznapi használati tárgy volt: szőnyegek, bútorok és edények, a többi pedig dísztárgy. A tárgyak stílusának kialakításánál a cionista eszmények által diktált stiláris elemeket használták. Ezek kialakításához gyűjtötték a tradicionális zsidó kézműves termékeket, és azok mintakincsét aktualizálva és új elemekkel bővítve alakították ki a jellegzetes, szecessziós Becalél stílust. Mintakincsükben elsősorban a héber betűk és az izraeli növények, állatok, tájképek részletei domináltak. Theodor Herzlnek, a modern politikai cionizmus megálmodójának profilja korai halála után nagyon hamar ikonikus szimbólumává vált a tárgyaknak. Herzl emlékplakettjét a Becalél vezető művésze, Boris Schatz készítette el bronzból. A budapesti Zsidó Múzeum 1936-ban felvette a kapcsolatot a Becalél Akadémiával, ami igazi szellemi áttörésnek számított, hiszen a magyarországi zsidó közösség hagyományosan anticionista volt. A Herzl plakettet 1936-ban, műtárgycserével szerezte meg gyűjteménye számára a Magyar Zsidó Múzeum.
