A díj egyetlen komoly jelöltje Schönfeld Judit volt, tizennégy esztendős kis akadémiai növendék, aki nemcsak tanárait és koncertközönségét ejtette bámulatba csodálatos muzikalitásával, hanem Hubermannt, a nehezen megközelíthető nagy mestert is elbűvölte, amikor utolsó pesti itt tartózkodása alkalmával Juditot meghallgatta. Az akadémia, a sötét politikai felhők ellenére is lázasan készülődött a Reményi-díj lejátszására, de erre az események következtében nem került már sor. Judit, az akadémia büszkesége, származása miatt édesanyjával és négy kis öccsével, a többi üldözöttek tragikus sorsára jutott, Auschwitzba került… A szomorú transzportot, melyben a kis Judit haladt, röviddel a megérkezés után osztályozták. Mikor Juditra került a sor, egy kéz nehezedett' gyönge vállára, egy SS tiszt nehéz keze. A kislány arcát maga felé fordította és gondolkozni kezdett hol is látta már ezt a csillogó tekinteteit, ezt a finom, értelmes homlokot. Budapesten, igen Budapesten, egy hangversenyén, a Zeneakadémián. Mendelssohnt játszotta akkor ez a kislány és csodálatos játéka még m<»t is a fülében cseng. Lassan elengedte a gyermek vállát. — Te hegedülsz, ugye? — szólt hozzá tört magyarsággal — Igen — felelte halkan Judit. A tiszt odasietett az osztályozó orvoshoz, valamit csendesen magyarázott neki, az érdeklődéssel hümmögött és Judit jobbra került, az életben hagyottak sorába. Aztán elkezdődtek a lágerélet szörnyű napjai. Halál és szenvedés, éhség és honvágy őrjítő keveredése. De esténként, mikor a priccsékre zsúfolt, csonttá fogyott testek szomorú pihenőjükre tértek, felhangzóit az éjszakában Judit hegedűjátéka. Az SS tisztek parancsára hegedült. A koncertek egyre gyakoribbak lettek. A hangok kiszűrődtek a tiszti barakkokból és a láger lakóinak szíve reménykedéssel telt meg. Hátha a kis Judit segít... Aztán egyszerre ennek is vége szakadt. Közeledtek a felszabadulás pillanatai. Juditot, a hegedű ifjú mesterét három SS tiszt egy szürke autóba ültette és elrobogtak vele a fejüket vesztett német menekülők sorai között. A táborkémény többé nem füstölt, a háború véget ért. Judit édesapja is hazajutott valahogyan Bergen-Belsenből, ahová munkaszolgálatos sorsa sodorta. A családi fészek, amely rövid idővel ezelőtt öt gyermek nevetésétől volt hangos, némán és üresen fogadta. Felesége és négy gyermeke került a gázhalálba és most fanatikus hittel várja haza az egyetlent; Juditot, akiről még eddig semmiféle hír a táborbeli hangversenyeken kívül nem érkezett. A bibliai étkezési tilalmakból levezetve a kecsegét a szefárd hagyomány kósernek, azaz fogyaszthatónak ítélte, míg a Magyarországon is követett askenázi tradíció nem. Chorin Áron aradi rabbi mesterét, Ezékiel Landau prágai rabbit követve engedélyezte a kecsege evését, s ezzel hatalmas felzúdulást keltett. A vitában végül a korszak szinte valamennyi rabbinikus tekintélye állást foglalt; a morvaországi főrabbi, Mordekhaj Benet kiközösítéssel fenyegette meg Chorint, mert szerinte döntésével bűnbe vezeti híveit. Chorin Áron addigra már arról volt ismert, hogy a német területekről lassan beszivárgó új, modernebb gondolatokat követi – ezek egy részével Prágában, Ezékiel Landau jesivájában találkozhatott. Enyhíteni szerette volna a túl szigorú vallási törvényeket, a kecsege fogyasztása mellett engedélyezte volna a szombati vasúti uazást is. Nogah Hacedek című, 1818-ban megjelent művében a szertartások egyszerűsítését követelte: héber helyett német nyelvű imákat és prédikációt valamint orgonahasználatot is engedélyezett volna. Ezeket a korszakban radikálisnak tekintett gondolatait végül tekintélyes magyarországi rabbik kérésére visszavonta. Chorin azonban nem előidézője, csak követője volt a reformoknak: a modernizálódó világ új problémák elé állította a zsidóságot. A felvilágosodás eszméi és a technikai fejlődés nyomán fellépő új helyzetek és jelenségek egyaránt zsidó vallásjogi válaszokat igényeltek, melyekre a rabbik a zsidó szövegek eltérő értelmezéséből adódóan különböző válaszokat adtak. Chorin a korszakban radikálisan újítóknak számítókat, melyekért egyesek kiátkozták, mások pedig a zászlójukra emelték. Ez a tény rávilágít a magyarországi zsidó közösség egyik legmeghatározóbb jellemzőjére: végzetes megosztottságára. Magyarország olvasztótégelyében egymás mellett éltek a szigorú ortodox szabályokat követők és az akkoriban formálódó reformok hívei; a keleti területeken pedig az askenázi többség mellett jelentős szefárd kisebbség is jelen volt. Ez a polarizáltság fennmaradt, és egyik meghatározójává vált a magyarországi zsidó közösség 19–20. századi történelmének.
