<text>A judaizmus reformirányzatát képviselő Ézsajás Vallásos Társaság az 1930–as években működött Budapesten. Szellemi irányítója Naményi Ernő, a zsidó művészet első kutatóinak egyike, a zsidó múzeum későbbi elnöke volt. Naményi nagyon fontosnak tartotta, hogy a vallásos szertartások során használt tárgyak esztétikailag is tökéletesek legyenek, ezért számos művészt ösztönzött modern judaikák tervezésére és elkészítésére. Leginkább a tipográfia művészetét hangsúlyozta, kiemelve a szakrális szövegek méltó megjelenítésének fontosságát.

<text>A kard a 19. század közepe óta foglalkoztatta zsidó múlt feltárásával foglalkozókat. Elsőként Löw Lipót ismertette a Ben Chananja című folyóiratában, majd Kohn Sámuel hívta fel rá a figyelmet a millenniumi kiállítás kapcsán. Az 1932–ben újranyitott Zsidó Múzeum gyűjtési terveiben is szerepelt; a múzeum vezetősége többször kérte az Andrássy gyűjtemény akkori tulajdonosát, Andrássy Gézát, hogy tegye lehetővé számukra a kard megszerzését. Andrássy 1933–ban jó minőségű fényképeket készíttetett a múzeum számára. </text>

Tervezője Vágó László, aki a korszak egyszerű, dekoratív stílusában építette fel a zsinagógát. Díszítésében a hatágú csillag és a héber feliratok dominálnak. Fő díszítménye a frigyszekrénnyel szemközti falon elhelyezett hatalmas hatágú csillag alakban írt héber szöveg. Ebben bibliai idézetek parafrázisai állítanak emléket a háborúban elesett hősöknek.

<text>Az első világháborút követő társadalmi változások eredményeként megváltozott a nők társadalmi helyzete, melyet a korszak divatja is tükrözött.
engedélyezi, addig a zsidó–német szövegben rövid ujjú ruha szerepel tilalmasként. </text>

A cég 1920-as években Bécsben megjelent katalógusa 818 tételt sorol fel, kizárólag héber betűs könyveket. </text>

</text>

A tekercs másik oldalán a tóramásoló hagyományos eszközei: a tintatartóban álló kihegyezett lúdtoll látható. </text>

<text>The first unit of the Hebrew Bible is the five books of Moses, the Torah. According to Jewish belief, the Torah was given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai, and with it he received its verbal explanations and commands, this oral doctrine, the Talmud. A larger chapter from the Torah, the weekly section, is read aloud every week. The Torah is written on parchment prepared according to strict rules, with ink that complies with ritual requirements, by the sofer, or Torah copyist. The Torah must be written and used according to the regulations set forth in tradition, otherwise the Torah will be “pasul,” i.e. not kosher. The Torah scrolls must be checked regularly so that any wear and tear or damage can be repaired to ensure that all of its letters are intact and complete. Krestin’s painting depicts this phase of the Torah scribe’s work, the inspection of the parchment scroll. The Torah scroll lies on a prayer shawl to protect it from physical contact with profane objects. Its mantle, in which it is stored when not in use, is at the edge of the table and the image, on which the phrase "the crown of the Torah" is written in a six-pointed star. On the other side of the scroll are the traditional tools of the Torah copyist: a sharpened quill pen standing in an inkwell.</text>

<text>A képes levelezőlapok elterjedésének időszakában viszonylag hamar megjelentek a zsidó közönséget ellátó kiadók. A new yorki Hebrew Publishing Company 96. számú képeslapja a női szerepek tréfás átalakulását mutatja. A képek értelmezését jiddis nyelvű feliratok segítik, s ezek mutatják a képek értelmezésének helyes, azaz a héber és jiddis olvasási iránynak megfelelően jobbról balra történő értelmezését is. </text>

<text>During the period when illustrated postcards became widespread, publishers catering to a Jewish audience emerged relatively quickly. Roughly coinciding with the heyday of postcard writing (c. 1890–1918), large numbers of European Jews emigrated to the West and the United States, and so the postcard also became a means of communication between those who had emigrated and those who remained at home. The illustrations featured on the postcards depicted new social roles for those who had remained in their homeland. Postcard No. 96 from the New York-based Hebrew Publishing Company depicts a humorous transformation of women’s roles. The three stages of the relationship between fashionably dressed women and men shown on the postcard are courtship, the relationship between the bride and groom, and the image of a quarreling married couple. Although presented in a humorous manner, this depicted the possibility of a new, free relationship between men and women—based on free choice and emotions—for the Eastern European community living under the tradition of arranged marriages. Yiddish captions aid in interpreting the images and also indicate the correct reading direction—from right to left, in accordance with the reading conventions of both Hebrew and Yiddish.</text>

<text>In the early days of research into the Jewish past and Jewish art, scholars' attention was primarily focused on the discovery and publication of documents. In the early years of the 19th century, the development of printing technology made it possible to publish fac-simile editions, such as the Sarajevo Haggadah of 1898 and the publication of some of the genizahs preserved in the St Petersburg library in 1905. The latter, the undertaking of Stassof and Gunzburg, was intended primarily to present the illustrated codex fragments. The title page of this large, ornately displayed album was created by Ivan Ropet using letters and decorative patterns found in the codices.
The album was borrowed by the Jewish Museum in Budapest from the library of the Vienna Jewish Community a few months before the German occupation of Austria, the Anschluss. Due to the German occupation, the album was not returned to Vienna, but survived the war years in Budapest.</text>
