<text>In the early days of research into the Jewish past and Jewish art, scholars' attention was primarily focused on the discovery and publication of documents. In the early years of the 19th century, the development of printing technology made it possible to publish fac-simile editions, such as the Sarajevo Haggadah of 1898 and the publication of some of the genizahs preserved in the St Petersburg library in 1905. The latter, the undertaking of Stassof and Gunzburg, was intended primarily to present the illustrated codex fragments. The title page of this large, ornately displayed album was created by Ivan Ropet using letters and decorative patterns found in the codices.
The album was borrowed by the Jewish Museum in Budapest from the library of the Vienna Jewish Community a few months before the German occupation of Austria, the Anschluss. Due to the German occupation, the album was not returned to Vienna, but survived the war years in Budapest.</text>
