Hanukkah lamps used in Eastern Europe were usually made of brass or copper with a rectangular molded base that are reminiscent of a bench. The eight oil containers on the bench, with manifold decorations on their back and side plates, are drawn from the typical Jewish iconography of plant and animal motives. It may be surprising that decorations show significant political figures of the era. On the two side plates of the Hanukkah menorah made of brass, we see two guardsmen. While on the back plate, Leopold II., who gave favorable legal framework for the Jews of the Austrian Empire, is visible. József osztrák császár profiljával készített hanukkai mécsestartó. A nyolc olajmécses pad alakban helyezkedik el, a két végén egy-egy tizennyolcadik századi öltözetben álló alabárdos figurája látható. A pad háttámláján négy ágaskodó oroszlán alakja között láthatjuk a császár jellegzetes félprofilját. II. József felvilágosult abszolutista uralkodó volt, s egységes, centralizált, modern állam megteremtésén dolgozott. 1783-ban adta ki azt a rendeletét, mellyel a zsidó közösséget szerette volna integrálni a társadalomba, s ehhez számos, a zsidó közösségek által is eltérően értelmezett szabályt vezetett be. Biztosította a zsidó népesség szabad költözését akár a városokba is, engedélyezte, hogy a zsidók minden foglalkozást űzhessenek, földet bérelhessenek és akár egyetemre is járhassanak. Az egységes kulturális közeg megteremtéséhez elrendelte államilag felügyelt zsidó iskolák felállítását, amelyben a felvilágosodás elveinek megfelelő tananyagot tanítottak. A zsidó tanok ellenőrzése érdekében megtiltotta héber nyelvű könyvek behozatalát az országba, de engedélyezte, hogy az Egyetemi Nyomda – a korabeli Magyarország egyik legjobb nyomdája! – nyomtassa a zsidó közösségben használt héber betűs könyveket. Alattvalóit egységes, civilizált népességnek akarta látni, ami hatalmas ellenállást váltott ki a tradíciójuk elvesztésétől félő közösségekben. Azt a rendeletét, amelyben elrendelte a szakáll levágását, az óriási tiltakozás miatt vissza kellett vonnia. A polgári jogegyenlőségért küzdő felvilágosultabb zsidó tömegek lelkesen fogadták reformjait, őt magát a valaha trónon ült legnagyobb humanistaként köszöntötték. A tradícióikat féltő, erősen vallásos tömegek ugyanakkor minden bajok forrásának tekintették a modernizációt pártoló uralkodót, aki reformjaival megbontotta a zsidó közösség egységét. Halála után a reformjainak egy részét utóda, II. Lipót folytatta, de az ő halála után a zsidó közösség emancipációja újabb fél évszázadra megtorpant. II. József és II. Lipót alakja a jogegyenlőségért folytatott küzdelmek során szimbolikussá nőtt, s portréjuk ezért jelenhetett meg akár a figurális ábrázolást elméletileg tiltó zsidó művészetben, szertartási tárgyakon. Múzeumunk gyűjteményében van teljesen hasonló tárgy II. Lipót portréjával is. A kiállított példány csonka: a bécsi Zsidó Múzeumban lévő ugyanilyen tárgy alapján tudjuk, hogy a padka hátlapján lévő oroszlánok eredetileg koronát tartottak az uralkodó feje fölé, megkétszerezve ezzel a tárgy magasságát. A II. József portréjával díszített tárgyat özv. Pap Béláné helyezte letétbe a gyűjteményben 1933-ban. A hanukkai mécses azóta folyamatosan szerepel az állandó kiállításban jelezve, hogy a múzeumot magáénak érző pesti zsidó közösség fontosnak tartja a jogegyenlőséget és a polgári érvényesülés lehetőségét, melyet a történelemben elsőként a felvilágosodás korának reformjai adtak meg számára. Die im § 3. anbefohlenen Zeugnisszettel müssen vor den Ortsobrigkeiten, oder ihren Beamten wohl aufbewahrt, bei der nächsten Conscriptionsrevision dem Revisionsoffizier vorgelegt, und von demselben für das Jahr 1788 zum erstenmal beide Namen, nämlich derjenige, den ein jeder bisher geführt hat und sodann auch der auf beständig angenommen bestimmte Vor- und Geschlechtsnamen in deutscher Sprache eingetragen werden. In den Conscriptionsbüchern für die nachfolgenden Jahre aber, werden nur die neu angenommenen Namen ohne den vorhin gebräuchlich gewesen zu erscheinen haben. § 6. Wird allgemein erklärt, dass diese Anordnung auf die bis letzten Dezember 1787 von der gesammten Judenschaft unter den bisherigen Namen ausgestellten Urkunden keinen Einfluss nehme, welche in Ihrer vorigen Wirksamkeit unabänderlich zu bleiben haben, auf was immer für eine Art die Unterfertigung geschehen ist. § 7. Um aller Arglistigkeit vorzubeugen und dieses Gesetz in volle Wirksamkeit zu setzen, werden folgende Strafen festgesetzt: a) derjenige Rabbiner, der mit 1. Jänner 1788 anfangen, die Geburts-, Trauungs- und Sterbfälle nicht in deutscher Sprache und nicht nach den bestimmten Namen eintragen oder die Bücher nicht in deutscher Sprache führen sollte, wird zum erstenmal mit 50 fl. zu bestrafen, das zweitemal aber sogleich seines Dienstes zu entlassen und für dienstunfähig zu erklären sein; b) derjenige, ohne Unterschied des Geschlechtes, der seines auf beständig angenommenen deutschen Vor- und Geschlechtsnamens sich künftig nicht, sondern eines ander bedienen sollte, wird − wenn er vermöglicht ist − ebenfalls mit 50 fl. zu bestrafen, ist er aber unvermöglich, aus allen unseren Statten mit seiner Familie abzuschaffen sein, doch haben alle auch unter einem anderen Namen von ihm ausgestellten Schuldscheine und Verbindlichkeiten, wenn er dessen überzeugt wird, gegen denselben immer zu gelten; c) derjenige, der seine Zeugnisszettel bis letzten November 1787 oben anbefohlenermassen nicht beigebracht haben wird, ist entweder mit 10 fl. an Geld, oder im Unvermögenheitsfalle mit 8 tägiger öffentlicher Arbeit unnachsichtlich zu bestrafen; d) alle diese Strafgelder sollen mit einer Hälfte der Kasse derjenigen Gemeinde, zu welcher der Schuldige gehört; mit den anderen Hälfte aber demjenigen zufallen, der so einen Unterschlief entdeckt und angezeigt haben wird.
