&lt;p&gt;Kornfeld 1852-ben született a csehországi Goltsch-Jenikauban. Szeszfőzde-bérlő apja taníttatni akarta gyerekeit: Zsigmond fivéreit orvosi és ügyvédi pályára küldte. Mire azonban rá került volna a sor, apja megvakult, majd meghalt, ezért Zsigmond kénytelen volt kimaradni a gimnáziumból és munka után nézni. Mindenesként kezdett dolgozni egy prágai bankban, ahol tehetsége és hihetetlen munkabírása révén villámgyorsan emelkedett a ranglétrán. 1877 decemberében Albert Rothschild felkérte Kornfeldet, hogy menjen Magyarországra és vegyen részt a Rothschild érdekeltségbe tartozó, a Credit-Anstalt „ikerbankjának” tekinthető Magyar Általános Hitelbank irányításában. Pár évvel korábban, 1873-ban Magyarországot pénzügyi összeomlás fenyegette, amitől egy Rothschild-érdekeltségű konzorcium 153 millió osztrák ezüstforintnyi gyorshitele mentette meg, ezért a Rothschildok számára alapvető fontosságú volt a magyar pénzügyi rendszer stabilitása. Kornfeld Pestre költözött és munkához látott. A konszolidációt betetőző Wekerle-féle pénzreformban, a korona 1892-es bevezetésében is döntő szerepet játszott. A huszadik század első évtizedére Kornfeld a magyar politikai-gazdasági elit köztiszteletnek örvendő és megkerülhetetlen tagjává vált. 1901 decemberétől a Felsőház örökös tagja, 1909-ben (halála előtt) megkapta a bárói címet is, azaz a magyarul sem tudó szegény banki mindenesből harminc év alatt magyar nemessé vált. Ugyanakkor nem keresztelkedett ki, sőt komoly szerepet vállalt a zsidó közéletben is.&lt;/p&gt;</text>
