Az épületet a bécsi sztárépítész, Ludwig Förster tervezte, a frigyszekrény pedig a magyar romantikus építészet mestere, Feszl Frigyes tervei alapján készült. Felavatásakor a zsinagóga korának legnagyobb zsidó imahelye volt. Az istentiszteleteket orgona és vegyes kórus kísérte, a rabbik kezdetben németül, majd magyarul prédikáltak.
