Fényes Adolf apja Fischmann Simon kecskeméti rabbi, anyja a pesti zsidó közösség első rabbijának, Wahrmann Izraelnek az unokája. A neves családból származó, kiváló festő több képe szerepel a Zsidó Múzeum gyűjteményében. Mózes vizet fakaszt a sziklából című festményét Krausz Simon, a vakmerő tőzsdei üzletkötéseiről híres bankigazgató vásárolta meg a múzeum számára 1922–ben, a közvetítésre pedig Kóbor Tamást, az Újság – később íróként is jelentős – munkatársát kérte fel. A festmény azt a jelenetet ábrázolja, amikor a pusztai vándorlás során Mózes a Hóreb hegyen botjával a sziklára üt, és isteni beavatkozással vizet fakaszt belőle. A bibliai szöveg folytatása az Amalek elleni küzdelemről és győzelemről szól – így a szöveges hagyományban járatosak számára a részlet felidézhette a nemzedékről nemzedékre feltámadó zsidóellenes támadások történetét is (2Mózes 17. fejezet).</text>
