Bár a túlnyomó többség az ortodoxia és a haszidizmus híve volt, megjelent a városban a szekuláris cionizmus is. 1925-ben Hájim Kugel, a Csehszlovákiai Zsidó Párt egyik vezetőjének igazgatásával itt nyílt meg az ország egyetlen világi oktatást nyújtó, leányok előtt is nyitva álló héber gimnáziuma. A modern, irodalmi héber nyelven folyó tanítás államilag is elismert képzést nyújtott.

<text>More than ten thousand Jews lived in Mukachevo, they made up nearly half of the city’s population. Though the overwhelming majority were Orthodox and Hassidic Jews, secular Zionism also appeared in the city. In 1925, Chaim Kugel, one of the leaders of the Jewish Party of Czechoslovakia, opened the only Hebrew high school in the country that provided secular education and was open to girls as well. Classes were taught in modern literary Hebrew; and the education at the school was approved by the state. The school, which had to struggle with the fierce resistance of the Hasidic rabbis, did not prepare his students for aliya (immigration to Israel), but sought to foster self-conscious Jewish intellectuals for local communities. Following the annexation of the area to Hungary, anti-Jewish provisions disrupted the Hebrew language training.</text>

<text>A Zsidó Múzeum alapítói szoros kapcsolatban álltak a Múlt és Jövő című folyóirattal. A lap rendszeresen közölt képes beszámolókat egy-egy nagy múltú magyarországi zsidó közösségről. 1912-ben hosszú cikksorozat jelent meg a kismartoni (ma: Eisenstadt, Ausztria) zsidók tárgyairól, szokásairól, történetéről. Az itt közölt fényképeket Wolf Sándor – a leggazdagabb kismartoni kereskedőcsalád leszármazottja, neves történettudós – bocsátotta a lap rendelkezésére, majd ezeket a képeket eljuttatta a Zsidó Múzeum részére is. Wolf Sándor maga is gyűjtő lévén, szülőházában, a nevezetes Wertheimer-házban múzeumot rendezett be. 1938-ban, az Anschlusst követően, Palesztinába emigrált, gyűjteményének jelentős része szétszóródott.</text>
