Szeszfőzde-bérlő apja taníttatni akarta gyerekeit: Zsigmond fivéreit orvosi és ügyvédi pályára küldte. Pár évvel korábban, 1873-ban Magyarországot pénzügyi összeomlás fenyegette, amitől egy Rothschild-érdekeltségű konzorcium 153 millió osztrák ezüstforintnyi gyorshitele mentette meg, ezért a Rothschildok számára alapvető fontosságú volt a magyar pénzügyi rendszer stabilitása. Kornfeld Pestre költözött és munkához látott. A konszolidációt betetőző Wekerle-féle pénzreformban, a korona 1892-es bevezetésében is döntő szerepet játszott. A huszadik század első évtizedére Kornfeld a magyar politikai-gazdasági elit köztiszteletnek örvendő és megkerülhetetlen tagjává vált. 1901 decemberétől a Felsőház örökös tagja, 1909-ben (halála előtt) megkapta a bárói címet is, azaz a magyarul sem tudó szegény banki mindenesből harminc év alatt magyar nemessé vált.
