A bibliai étkezési tilalmakból levezetve a kecsegét a szefárd hagyomány kósernek, azaz fogyaszthatónak ítélte, míg a Magyarországon is követett askenázi tradíció nem. Chorin Áron aradi rabbi mesterét, Ezékiel Landau prágai rabbit követve engedélyezte a kecsege evését, s ezzel hatalmas felzúdulást keltett. A vitában végül a korszak szinte valamennyi rabbinikus tekintélye állást foglalt; a morvaországi főrabbi, Mordekhaj Benet kiközösítéssel fenyegette meg Chorint, mert szerinte döntésével bűnbe vezeti híveit. Chorin Áron addigra már arról volt ismert, hogy a német területekről lassan beszivárgó új, modernebb gondolatokat követi – ezek egy részével Prágában, Ezékiel Landau jesivájában találkozhatott. Enyhíteni szerette volna a túl szigorú vallási törvényeket, a kecsege fogyasztása mellett engedélyezte volna a szombati vasúti uazást is. Nogah Hacedek című, 1818-ban megjelent művében a szertartások egyszerűsítését követelte: héber helyett német nyelvű imákat és prédikációt valamint orgonahasználatot is engedélyezett volna. Ezeket a korszakban radikálisnak tekintett gondolatait végül tekintélyes magyarországi rabbik kérésére visszavonta. Chorin azonban nem előidézője, csak követője volt a reformoknak: a modernizálódó világ új problémák elé állította a zsidóságot. A felvilágosodás eszméi és a technikai fejlődés nyomán fellépő új helyzetek és jelenségek egyaránt zsidó vallásjogi válaszokat igényeltek, melyekre a rabbik a zsidó szövegek eltérő értelmezéséből adódóan különböző válaszokat adtak. Chorin a korszakban radikálisan újítóknak számítókat, melyekért egyesek kiátkozták, mások pedig a zászlójukra emelték. Ez a tény rávilágít a magyarországi zsidó közösség egyik legmeghatározóbb jellemzőjére: végzetes megosztottságára. Magyarország olvasztótégelyében egymás mellett éltek a szigorú ortodox szabályokat követők és az akkoriban formálódó reformok hívei; a keleti területeken pedig az askenázi többség mellett jelentős szefárd kisebbség is jelen volt. Ez a polarizáltság fennmaradt, és egyik meghatározójává vált a magyarországi zsidó közösség 19–20. századi történelmének. Az épület egyemeletes, nyeregtetővel lezárt középső tömbjének Ny-i oldalához földszintes, félnyeregtetős, hullámvonalas attikával lezárt épületrész csatlakozik és a telekhatár É-i végén zárul. A középső tömb és az É-i telekhatár között az új funkciónak megfelelő, új beépítés. A középső tömb K-i és Ny-i homlokzatainak karzatszintjén négy-négy körablak, É-in és D-in egy-egy körablak. Az itt álló házát 1890-ben alakíttatta át Tóth István (ifj. Bíró István építőmester). Hamarosan itt működött a Loth-féle, „Ét- és Táncterem a Pistához” címzett vendéglő. 1918-ban az orthodox hitközség vásárolta meg a házat s még abban az évben zsinagóga céljára alakíttatta át. A női karzat megépítése miatt a volt tánctermet megmagasították, ennek megközelítése az épület mögötti fedett falépcsőről történt. A férfi bejárat az utcára merőleges homlokzatra került. A második világháború után többféle funkciója volt, majd sokáig üresen állt. 1990–1991-ben lebontották, majd részben visszaépítették, a díszítőfestést rekonstruálták az épületbe a Magyar Fotográfiai Múzeum költözött.
