Schmid keresztény nyomdász volt, aki keleti nyelveket tanult Bécsben, majd a héber nyomdászatot Lembergben tanulmányozta. Nyomdájában elsősorban a klasszikus szövegeket, Bibliát, Talmudot, kommentárokat és imakönyveket nyomtattak, kiváló minőségben. Az emancipáció előtti korszakban, a hátrányos jogi helyzetben lévő közösségekben a különféle jótékonysági egyletek biztosították a zsidó közösségek szegényebb, társadalmilag hátrányos helyzetű tagjainak ellátását.
