„A Magyar Zsidó Múzeum mindent gyűjt, a mi a zsidó hitű magyaroknak, de általában az egész zsidóságnak vallási és kulturális múltjára, történetére, művészeti ábrázolására vonatkozik. Lehet az bronz, kép, szobormű, régi pénz és érem, szóval minden műtárgy és documentum, amelynek zsidó vonatkozása van.” – írta a Magyar Zsidó Múzeum Bizottsága 1912 szeptember 20-án kelt gyűjtési felhívásában.
A múzeumi gyűjteményeket kiegészítő fényképes adattárak létrehozása a 19. század végére általános muzeológiai gyakorlattá vált. A módszeres zsidó múzeumi gyűjtés ebben az időszakban indult, ezért a zsidó múzeumokban a fényképek már nemcsak a tudományos kutatást segítő adattári dokumentumként, hanem a múzeumi gyűjtemények alapjait jelentő muzeális tárgyakként is megjelentek.
A pesti Zsidó Múzeum alapítása után, 1912-ben Fürst Aladár a Múlt és Jövő hasábjain hívta fel a fényképek gyűjtésének fontosságára a figyelmet, cikkében a „zsidó kultúrtörténeti értékkel bíró tárgyaknak fényképét és leírását”, valamint „régi zsinagógák, templomi szerek, okmányok, zsidó iparművészeti munkák, illusztrációk” fényképeit kérte. A kezdeményezés eredményességét jelzi, hogy a Magyar Zsidó Múzeum 1915-ben megjelent első katalógusában az első tételek között szerepel több mint negyven zsinagóga fényképe, valamint híres zsidók portéi.
A Múzeum alapításától alakuló fényképtárunk számára sok vidéki zsinagóga belső teréről ekkor készült először és utoljára fényképfelvétel, nem egy közülük kiemelkedő fotográfiai minőségben.
A fényképek mára felbecsülhetetlen értékű dokumentációs értéke mellett a korábban csak zsidó szertartási környezetben látható tárgyakat, zsinagógai tereket beemelte a zsidóságról szóló kulturális diskurzus világába.

A 18. századi kéziratos luxus-imakönyvek készítésénél két, egymással párhuzamos trend figyelhető meg. Az egyik irányzat a nyomtatott könyvek formai megjelenését követi: a nyomtatott betűket és a rézmetszeteket utánozza, ezért kizárólag tintával, fehér pergamenen fekete vonalakkal dolgozik. A másik irányzat ugyanakkor a középkori kéziratos hagyomány által megőrzött sokszínű képeket és díszített betűket alkalmazza továbbra is. Az elmosódott címlapja miatt nehezen azonosítható pici imakönyv alkalmi imákat tartalmaz: az étkezés utáni áldásokat, az úti és a tengeri utazáshoz előírt imát vagy az újhold megszentelését. A kéziratos imakönyv kétféle betűtípust használ: az imák szövegét a szakrális szövegek írásához is használt szögletes betűket, az rövidebb utasításokat, magyarázó sorokat pedig a spanyol területeken használt kurzív héberre emlékeztető betűkkel, jiddisül. Nisszán, sziván, támmuz, áv, elul, valamint kiszlév, svát, ádár (első és második) hónapok újhold napjait megelőző napokat nevezzük Jom kippur kátánnak.
E böjt arra emlékeztet, hogy a sivatagi, illetve a jeruzsálemi Szentélyben az újholdak napján külön áldozatokat mutattak be vezeklésül az elmúlt hónapban elkövetett bűnökért.
A Szentély idejében az áldozatok bemutatása hozott engesztelést az elkövetett bűnökre, míg napjainkban - Szentély nem lévén - a böjtölés és az imák helyettesítik az áldozatok bemutatását illetve hozzák meg az Örökkévaló bocsánatát bűneinkre.

Az első teljes héber nyelvű nyomtatott Ószövetség 1488–ban jelent meg Itáliában, a zsidó könyveket elsőként kiadó Soncino–nyomdában. A 16. század első éveitől kezdve számos keresztény kiadó is megjelentette az Ószövetség héber szövegét, jellemzően latin nyelvű apparátussal kísérve.
Christianus Reineccius korrigált szövegű kiadása elsőként 1725–ben, majd 1739–ben és 1756–ban jelent meg. A második kiadás belső címlapjának rézmetszete Mózes, Áron és Dávid király alakjával díszített. Mózes a két kőtáblával, Áron a főpap ruházatában, az efóddal és a füstölővel, Dávid király pedig a hárfával szerepel. Az emberalakokat a salamoni szentélyben ábrázolja a metszet készítője, a két oszlop között a kérubokkal díszített szent ládát láthatjuk. A kép megértését segíti a Mózes és Áron feje fölött elhelyezett két tábla, melyeken a Példabeszédek könyvének két versének kezdőszavai olvashatók. (Példabeszédek 9:1, 9:4.) A kompozíció felső harmadában a felvilágosodás korszakában gyakori, Isteni jelenlétet mutató ábrázolás: felhők között háromszögbe helyezett szem. Alatta héber betűs felirat: „Kavod Adonáj – Isten dicsősége”, valamint az erre utaló bibliai mondat helye: Ezékiel 1:28.

Görög–héber nyelvű Biblia töredéke, melynek története kötéstáblára ragasztott ajándékozó levélben olvasható:
„Ezen elöl–hátul csonka bibliát mint a Sárospataki collegium kisdiákja vettem meg, miután hallottam, hogy egy falusi ref. lelkész neje lapokat tép ki belőle, valahányszor egy darab papirosra szüksége van. A zsemle–kihordót, ki ezt nekem mondta, megkértem: venné meg számomra ezt az ócska könyvet, így azt megszereztem néhány hatosért.
Amint pár nappal ezelőtt lapozgattam benne, ráakadtam, hogy mindjárt utána az első erre alkalmas helyre, Jósua könyve elé biggyesztettem nevemet akkori diákszokás szerint: Hic liber est meus sat. 1862.
Most a Magyar Zsidó Múzeumnak ajándékozom azt mint értékes régiséget.
