Kevéssé ismert, hogy látogatói között szép számmal voltak ortodox és haszid zsidók is. Házának hatalmas konyháján nap mint nap számtalan vendég és szegény lakhatott jól. 1922-ben alapított jesivája államilag is elismert rabbiképző intézményként működött. Hans Lampalzer munkácsi fotográfus igazi lesifotósként fényképezte a jellegzetes viseletű kelet-európai ortodox rabbikat, majd a képeket jó pénzért, emléktárgyként árusította a haszid rabbik követőinek. Marienbad in Czechoslovakia was one of the most elegant spa towns in Central Europe. It is scarcely known that there were a great number of Orthodox and Hasidic Jews among its visitors. From the 1920s onwards, Rabbi Haim Eleazar Spira, the well-known rabbi of Mukachevo, was a regular visitor to the spa town, who was the leader of the largest Hasidic community of Transcarpathia from 1913 until his death, in 1937. The rabbi with a charismatic and confrontational personality, had a great number of followers; many Hassidic Jews and Christians as well visited him seeking advice or healing. He founded a yeshiva in 1922, which also functioned as a state-recognized rabbinical institution. Hans Lampalzer a photographer from Mukachevo, as a real paparazzi, regularly took photos of Eastern European Orthodox rabbis in their typical costumes. Although in Hungary the idea of Zionism did not become popular, at the turn of the century, more than thirty local groups began to function, including in 1898, the famous Ahavat Zion (the love of Zion) of Bratislava Yeshiva. In the photograph taken of the library of the Ahavat Zion was also published as a postcard. The reading room is furnished with simple furniture and a photo of Theodor Herzl on the wall, and of Max Nordau, on the stand on the corner are visible. The man sitting at the end of a long table reads Die Welt, the newspaper of the World Zionist Organization published in Vienna. The picture was probably taken after Herzl’s death in 1904.
