Tavaszi ünnep az egyiptomi szabadulásra emlékeztető pészah. A történelmi eseményre és az isteni csodákra emlékeztető nyolc napos ünnep során tartózkodni kell a kovászos ételek fogyasztásától, ezért az ünnep jelképe lett a macesz, vagy kovásztalan kenyér. Az ünnepet a szédereste vezeti be, melynek során meghatározott rendben kell elfogyasztani olyan rituális ételeket, melyek az egyiptomi szolgaságra és a szabadulásra emlékeztetnek. Az est szertartáskönyve a haggada, melyben a történelmi események leírása mellett szerepelnek az elmondandó imák, énekek és egyéb kapcsolódó történetek is. A széderesti vacsora hagyományos kellékei a szédertálak, melyeken több esetben külön kis tartók szolgálhatnak a jelképes ételek elhelyezésére. Vannak emeletes szédertálak is, melyeken elkülönítve lehet elhelyezni a maceszlapokat.
A 18-19. században a zsidók többsége még falun élt, s házaló kereskedésből, terményfelvásárlásból, a földesúri javak bérletéből tartotta fenn magát, népes családját és a zsidó közösségi intézményeket. A reformkorban fokozatosan bekapcsolódhattak az akkoriban fejlődésnek induló magyar ipar megteremtésébe, s a modernizáció fontos elemévé váltak.
A később világhírűvé váló herendi porcelángyárat Fischer Mór tatai fazekas alapította 1839-ben. A herendi gyárban készült szédertálak között két különleges, széderező család festett képét ábrázoló is található. Mindkettő peremén a szédereste hagyományos mozzanatainak felsorolása látható kis medaillonokban. A tálak öblébe egy-egy széderestét tartó családot festettek. Mindkét kép olyan, amely a zsidó közösségben ismert volt a tizenkilencedik század közepe-vége felé. A rózsaszín tálban lévő kép az 1609-ben megjelent egyik első illusztrált, nyomtatott széderesti elbeszélés, a velencei haggada egyik jelenete után készülhetett, míg a kék tálban lévő Oppenheim 1867 körül készült széderjelenetének adaptációja.
A rózsaszín szédertál a Magyar Zsidó Múzeum első tárgyai közül való: 1914-ben került a gyűjteménybe a pápai Lövy Lipót ajándékaként. A kék tálat 1945 után, a Joint anyagi segítségével vásárolta meg a múzeum.
