                <text>A zsidó közösségek halottaikra a haláluk évfordulóján imádkozással, tanulással és emlékmécsesek meggyújtásával emlékeznek. A falra helyezhető halotti mécsestartó 1822-ben készült Óbudán, és az óbudai házalók imaházának berendezéséhez tartozott. Az akkor már közel százéves régiséget Weisz Simon, az óbudai közösség egyik elöljárója juttatta el a gyűjteménynek. A tárgy múzeumba kerülése azért is fontos, mert a judaikagyűjtés addigi – elsősorban a művészeti értékekre koncentráló – gyakorlatába beemelte a hétköznapi, de a hajdani zsidó közösségek vizuális világában gyakran előforduló, egyszerűbb tárgyakat is. </text>

A zsidó hagyomány szerint a halottat lepellel letakarták, fejénél gyertyát gyújtottak, majd egy éjszakán át a szentegylet tagjai imádkoztak és virrasztottak mellette. Másnap reggel szigorú előírásokat követve, tiszta gyolcsokkal és vízzel alaposan megtisztították, majd ráadták a fehér gyolcsból készített halotti ruhát, és egyszerű, gyalulatlan deszkára helyezve még aznap eltemették. A női halottak mellett mindezt nők végezték, és ők mondták az előírt imákat is. Az 1833-ból származó imakönyv Henle asszony, Johanan Elzasz özvegye részére készült Frankfurt am Mainban. A korszak imakönyveihez hasonlóan a quadrát betűs héber imaszövegek mellett az apró, rasibetűs német nyelvű utasítások pontosan meghatározzák, hogy melyik imát mikor, milyen rituális esemény mellett kell elmondani.</text>
