Kohn Sámuel a híres bajai rabbi, Kohn Schwerin Götz unokájaként született 1841-ben. A kismartoni és a pápai jesívák után rabbiképesítését a korszak modern zsidó tudományosságának egyik fellegvárában, a breslaui rabbiképzőben szerezte. 1866-ban választották meg a Dohány utcai zsinagóga rabbijának, ahol ő vezette be a magyar nyelvű prédikációkat. 1884-ben jelentette meg „A zsidók története Magyarországon” című munkáját, melyben újszerű elméletet állított fel: e szerint a magyarországi zsidók a nyolcadik században egy évszázadnyi időre zsidó hitre tért kazárok leszármazottai, akik „mózesvallású magyarokként” a honfoglaló magyarsággal egyszerre érkeztek a Kárpát-medencébe. A kazár rokonság elméletét tudományos körökben már megjelenésének évében megcáfolták, de az erőteljesen asszimilálódó magyarországi zsidó közösségben mégis nagyon népszerű lett. A gyökértelenséggel vádolt zsidó közösség előszeretettel hivatkozott Kohn elméletére, jóllehet a magyarországi zsidó közösségek története nem folyamatos: a középkori előzmények után a török hódoltság időszakában, majd a tizennyolcadik századi újratelepítés során a zsidó lakosság többször kicserélődött. Elmélete a későbbi történetíróknál is megjelent, s szinte máig meghatározza a magyar zsidók történeti tudatát. Kohn Sámuel történetíróként jelentőset alkotott: összegyűjtötte a magyar történelemre vonatkozó héber forrásokat, és ő írt először magyar zsidó régiségekről, a zsidó történeti források összegyűjtésének és megőrzésének szükségességéről. Vezetésével állították össze azt a kiállítást, mely 1896-ban, Magyarország ezeréves fennállásának ünnepére rendezett Ezredéves Kiállításon elsőként mutatta be a magyarországi zsidók tárgyi–történeti emlékeit. Ennek a gyűjtésnek egy kis töredéke lett a húsz évvel később megnyílt zsidó múzeum törzsanyaga. Szobrát a jeles zsidó szobrász, a szintén Bajáról származó Telcs Ede készítette el a múzeum felkérésére, Kohn fiának anyagi támogatásával. Telcs a korszak elismert művésze volt. Ő készítette egyebek mellett a nemzeti romantika költőjének, Vörösmarty Mihálynak szobrát csakúgy, mint a Hősök terén álló emlékművön Szent László király alakját. A zsidó múzeum megrendelésére a híres 19. századi rabbi, Löw Lipót és a magyar nyelvű zsidó költészet jelese, Kiss József szobrát is elkészítette.
