A zsidó vallástörvények szerint a zsidó élet alapköve a szombat megtartása, melynek gazdag és nagyon alaposan szabályozott rituáléja alakult ki. A szombat fogadása és a szombat búcsúztatása közötti időszakra a rabbinikus legendák szerint minden zsidó egy különleges, kiegészítő lelket is kap, ez a nesama jetéra. Ez a kiegészítő lélek a szombat végén eltávozik a testtől, ami szomorúvá, és különösen esendővé teszi ekkor az embereket. A szombat és a hétköznapok elválasztásának szertartása a havdala, vagyis elválasztás. „Áldott, aki elválasztja a szentet és a hétköznapit, a világosságot és a sötétséget, Israelt és a többi népeket, a szombatot és a hétköznapokat.” A szertartás borra és fényekre mondott áldásokból, valamint illatos fűszerek megszagolgatásából áll, ami a szombat kellemességére emlékeztet. Az illatos fűszereket tartalmazó fűszertartót kicsit megrázva, illatanyagát aktiválva kézről kézre adják. Fűszertartó bármi lehet, amiben a fűszerek illata élvezhető. Léteznek gyümölcs, hal, madár, kisvonat és még számos egyéb formában, de legelterjedtebb mégis a torony alakú fűszertartó lett. A toronyalak elterjedtségét indokolhatja, hogy a szombati liturgiában a tornyot többször is pozitív tartalommal, az isteni erő és segítség szimbólumaként említik. A torony alakú fűszertartók Európában a 16. századtól terjedtek el, és formájuk általában követi a területen alkalmazott építészeti elemeket, nem ritkán egy az egyben megmintázva középületek vagy akár templomok tornyait is. A tornyok tetején gyakran látunk kis zászlócskákat, melyek az építészeti hatást fokozzák. A szintén gyakran alkalmazott kis csengettyűkkel együtt a fűszertartók mozgatása során lobognak, csilingelnek, amivel a szaglás mellett további érzékszerveket vonnak be a szertartás élvezetébe. A csengettyűk a rossz szellemek elriasztásában, távoltartásában is szerepet játszhatnak. A részben aranyozott ezüstfiligrán torony zászlójának felirata szerint adományokból készült 1831-ben, és a Kanizsai Jótékonysági Egylet tulajdona. A Batthyányiak birtokát képező Nagykanizsán a 18. század első felétől működött a hitközség. Számos jótékonysági, kulturális és más feladatokat ellátó egyesület működött a közösségben. 1829-ben a zsinagógai szertartások művészi színvonalának emelése érdekében férfikórust szerveztek, s bevezették a bécsi kántor, Salamon Sulzer szerzeményeit. Magyarországon először itt használtak zsinagógában orgonát 1845-ben, Löw Lipót rövid nagykanizsai rabbiskodása idején. 1884-ben itt alkalmazták az Országos Rabbiképző Intézet első végzettjét, Neumann Edét, aki bevezette a Geiger Ábrahám féle német reform imakönyv használatát Nagykanizsán.
