Hanuka posztbiblikus ünnep az i.e. 169–166 között sikeresen megvívott Makkabeus szabadságharc emlékére. Az ünnep azonban nem a szabadságharc politikai tartalmára utal, hanem arra az isteni csodára, mely a jeruzsálemi Szentély újraavatásával kapcsolatban volt tapasztalható: az egy napra elegendő rituálisan tiszta olívaolaj nyolc napig égett, addig, amíg az új adagot elkészíthették. Erre a csodára emlékeztet az ünnep a nyolc egymást követő napon meggyújtott fényekkel. A szövegek nem szabályozzák a gyertyatartót, csak nyolc lángot említenek és szabályoznak; e lángok összekapcsolásával alakult ki a hanukai mécsestartók/gyertyatartók sokféle, térben és időben nagyon különböző változata. A praktikumon túlmutató részletek és díszítések a parancsolatok megszépítésének, kiteljesítésének vallásos kötelezettsége, a hiddur micva miatt jelennek meg. Minden parancsolat végrehajtása teljesebb, ha a kellékek megszólítják az érzékeket is, s így a cselekedetek esztétikai minősége is vallásos tartalmat nyer. Ezért a szertartási tárgyak megtervezése, előállítása is szakrális cselekménnyé magasztosul, s végül a tárgy megjelenése, ikonográfiai elemei jogosan értelmezhetőek vallási–filozófiai gondolatokkal, tartalmakkal. Az EightDays Design szokatlan menórája megfelel a hanukai lángok meggyújtásához szükséges ősi szabályoknak, ugyanakkor formájában és anyaghasználatában egyaránt kortárs darab. Oktaéder alakja hanuka nyolc napját idézi, az egyes lapok élhosszúsága pedig 18 cm, ami a héber ’háj = élő’ szó héber betűinek számértékével azonos. A sorozatgyártással, változatos színekben készülő menóra kiváló minőségű műanyagból, korianból készül. A betonból készült prototípust 2011-ben az EightDays Design ajándékozta gyűjteményünknek. (Tzs) The Eight Days Design group (András Darányi, Eszter Hajdú, Orsolya Kecskés, Marcell Égi) made this new Hanukkah menorah with the aim to create contemporary Judaica. It has the form of an even octahedron, with one side for each day of the holiday. It complies with the traditional regulations regarding the lights of Hanukkah on the eight days of the holiday, but it is a progressive piece both in its material and in its form. Each side of the octahedron is 18 cm long, referring to the numerical value of the Hebrew word hay, meaning “living”. The menorah is made in various colors, mostly from a solid material called corian. This prototype, made of concrete, was donated to the museum in 2015 by András Darányi.
