                <text>A beteglátogatás kötelezettsége és a zsidó önkormányzatiság középkori eredetű hagyománya hozta létre a beteglátogató egyleteket (bikur holim társaságokat), amelyek gondoskodtak a közösségek betegeiről. Különösen szükséges volt ez az olyan közösségekben, mint a 19. század elejei Pest. Mivel Pest városa nem tűrt meg zsidókat a falai között, ezért a vásárokra érkező kereskedők a városhatárhoz lehető legközelebbi helyen, az Orczy bárók birtokán álló fogadóban béreltek raktárakat, és gondoskodtak a vásárokra érkezők ellátásáról. Ez az épület, az Orczy ház lett a pesti zsidó közösség bölcsője, a „Judenhof”. A hatalmas, három udvaros, kétemeletes házban az 1830-as években 48 lakás 142 szobájában már 284-en laktak, és működött itt 37 raktár, 3 vendéglő, kávéház, mészárszék és fürdő. Itt alakították ki az első két zsinagógát is.  Pest gyorsan fejlődő modern város volt, ahová elsősorban fiatal emberek, fiatal családok költöztek, anélkül a népes családi háttér nélkül, ami a falusi vagy kisvárosi életben még jellemző volt. Ennek pótlására, a zsidó közösségi életben már korábban is létező egyletek és intézmények alapján jól tagolt szociális ellátórendszert alakítottak ki. Ezek egyike volt a beteglátogató (bikur holim) egylet. Az egylet tagjai a zsinagógában is külön közösséget alkottak, ennek emléke a saját előimádkozó imakönyvük 1838-ból. A héber betűk számértékéből számított dátumot a „Teljes felépülést Izrael egész népének” mondat pirossal írt betűinek számértékéből nyerhetjük. A kötet az Orczy ház lebontását követően, 1938-ban került a gyűjteményünkbe. &#13;

                <text>1831 július 12-én a pápai Szalczer Ignácz 28 éves vékony termetű fűszerkereskedő zsidó útlevelet kért, hogy Pápáról „Isten kegyelmébül egészséges Helyből, ahol sem Cholera, sem más dögletes s ragadós nyavalya nincsen” Óbudára utazhasson „fogadott kocsin”, felesége „visszahozása végett”. Szalczer Ignác végül július 17-én, vasárnap kelt útra, és az útjába eső valamennyi település járványügyi főfelelőse bejegyezte, hogy ott volt. Még vasárnap eljutott az „epemirigytül mentes” Veszprémbe, Ösküre, Várpalotára, és hétfőn, 18-án megérkezett Székesfehérvárra. Áthaladt Pákozdon, Tétényben és Budán is. Abban az évben 19-én volt a Tisa beAv-i böjtnap, aznap nem utazott, és 20-án már újra Székesfehérváron volt, vagy voltak immár a feleségével együtt. </text>
