Nyomtatványai elsősorban a modernizálódó zsidó közösség igényeit elégítették ki: itt jelent meg az első magyar fordítással ellátott Biblia (1840) és Rosenthal Móric Pirké Ávot fordítása is (1841), mely a Talmud első magyar nyelven olvasható részlete volt. Az 1834-ben nyomtatott „Hagoda” címlapján a rézmetszetes aratási jelenet mellett az Egyetemi Nyomda héber betűkészletének több változatát is láthatjuk: a héber szövegeket kvadrat betűkkel, míg a jiddis-németet ún. Rási-betűkkel szedték. Különösen érdekes ez ott, ahol egy mondaton belül változik a kettő: a címlapon Rási-betűkkel írják, hogy a könyv megvásárolható Mordeháj Lévi könyvárusnál – a héber név azonban már a szakrális szöveg szedéséhez is használt betűkkel szerepel. A könyv címének szedése hibás: a „hágádá sel pészách” helyett „ál pészách” szerepel, ami a hasonló héber sin és ájin betűk felcserélése miatt történhetett. Bloch Móric 1815-ben született, fiatal korában hagyományos zsidó oktatásban részesült, de emellett a világi tudományokkal is megismerkedett. Tanult görögül és latinul, majd Pesten és Párizsban járt egyetemre. 1840-ben, amikor a pozsonyi országgyűlésen felmerült a zsidók egyenjogúsításának kérdése, Eötvös József kérésére hazatért, hogy részt vegyen a zsidó közösség modernizálásában és magyarosításában. Ennek része volt, hogy 1840-41-ben az Egyetemi Nyomda kiadásában megjelentette Mózes öt könyvének magyar-héber kétnyelvű szövegét. Bloch a fordítás mellett a szöveget „jegyzetekkel fölvilágította” – azaz a Talmudból vett magyarázatokkal egészítette ki fordítását. A Biblia további részeinek fordítását is tervezte, de ebből csak az „Első jósok” azaz a korai próféták könyveinek fordítása jelent meg. Ő volt a szakmai lektora az első magyar nyelvű zsidó imakönyvnek (lásd.42 tétel) is. Munkásságának elismeréseképp a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia tagjai sorába választotta, ő lett az első zsidó akadémikus – néhány évvel később bekövetkező kitéréséig az egyetlen. Title A name given to the resource Imakönyv Prayerbook Description An account of the resource A német területekről indult zsidó felvilágosodás (haszkala) egyik törekvése volt, hogy a zsidó szent iratokat és imákat nemzeti nyelvekre fordítsák a társadalomba integrálódni szándékozó, világias műveltséggel rendelkező zsidók számára. Magyarországon az első imakönyv fordítást az óbudai zsidó iskola tanítója, Rosenthal Móricz készítette, majd az első magyar zsidó Bibliafordítás készítője, Bloch Móric (később: Ballagi Mór) ellenőrizte. A könyv Pozsonyban, 1841–ben jelent meg. Külön érdekessége, hogy belső címlapján a pesti reform–közösség zsinagógájának, az Orczy házban működő „Cultustempel”–nek első ábrázolása látható rézmetszeten. A képen a divatosan öltözött zsidók a királyért és a hazáért imádkoznak. A jelenet eltér a hagyományos zsinagógai jelenetektől: az újszerűen a frigyszekrény elé állított tóraolvasó pult, a bima mellett álló rabbi és kántor ornátust, a gyerekkórus egyenruhát visel. Az ünnepségen részt vevő közönség a korszak biedermeier divatjának megfelelően, erős asszimilációs hatásokról árulkodó külsővel vesz részt. A férfiak borotváltak, asszonyaik pedig kivágott ruhákban, fedetlen fővel követik az eseményeket a női karzatról. A könyv maga Majmonidész Tévelygők útmutatója című művének fordításához készült kommentár, a filozófiai kifejezések magyarázata és szótára. A Tévelygők útmutatóját Majmonidész eredetileg héber betűkkel, arab nyelven írta, melyet még életében lefordított héberre a Béziers-ben élő Smuel ibn Tibbon. A pontos fordítás elkészítése érdekében több levelet is váltottak. A Tévelygők útmutatója azonnal népszerű lett, kéziratai elterjedtek az egész zsidó világban. A Széfer ruah hen nyomtatásban először Velencében, 1549-ben jelent meg, Israel Cornelius Adelkind nyomdájában. Adelkind annál a Daniel Bombergnél tanulta ki a mesterségét, aki elsőként nyomtatott héber könyveket; ő adta ki 1520-ban a Talmud első nyomtatott sorozatát, mely a mai napig meghatározza a kötetek lapbeosztását és számozását. A levéltárunkban lévő Széfer ruah hen példány lapszélein azonosítatlan koraújkori szefárd kézírással írt jegyzetek vannak; de a kötet askenáz környezetből, Rosenthal Tóbiás bonyhádi neológ rabbi ajándékaként került a gyűjteménybe.
