A 18. században kiépülő magyarországi zsidó községek számtalan jóléti intézményt tartottak fenn. Legelterjedtebbek a hevrá kádisák voltak, melyek elsődleges feladata a halottak rituális eltemetése és a temetők fenntartása volt. A temetkezések költségeit és a betegek, árvák, özvegyek segélyezését a közösség valamennyi tagjától begyűjtött adományokból, a cedákából fedezték. A hevrá kádisák a helyi alapszabályokat, a tagok névlistáit és a könyvelést általában díszesen kimunkált jegyzőkönyvben, görög eredetű héber szóval pinkászban vezették. A jánoshalmi hevrá kádisá jegyzőkönyvének címlapja a 18–19 századi héber könyvek jellegzetes kapuzatos díszítésével készült, melynek kapumezőjében olvasható a jegyzőkönyv címe, mely a településnevet a helyben használt változatban, Jankovácként rögzíti. A címlap alsó harmadának festett temetési jelenetén láthatjuk, hogy a hevrá kádisá tagjai vállukon viszik a halottat a temetőbe, előttük imatáblát tartó férfi. Az ábrázolás emléke annak a régi, a modernizálódó államok közegészségügyi rendszabályaival megszüntetett gyakorlatnak, amikor koporsó nélkül, egyszerű deszkára fektetve temették el a halottakat.

Description

A zsidó közösségekben alapvető érték az önkéntes jótékonyság és a jótékony célú adomány, a cedáká. Az emancipáció előtti korszakban, a hátrányos jogi helyzetben lévő közösségekben a különféle jótékonysági egyletek biztosították a zsidó közösségek szegényebb, társadalmilag hátrányos helyzetű tagjainak ellátását. A kiterjedt szociális hálónak mindenki részese volt: a vagyonosabbak adományokkal támogatták a szegényeket és a segítő egyleteket, a rászorultak pedig ezek segítségével kerülhettek jobb helyzetbe. A tizennyolcadik században már létező, 1809-ben zsinagógát is építő irsai zsidó közösségben 1823-ból maradt fenn az első adomány nyilvántartó könyv. A nagy alakú füzet címlapján szív alakú papírrátétben olvashatjuk a dokumentum címét, a rátét alatt pedig megfestett papírdarabokból összeállított kétfejű sas alakja látszik. A kötet első oldalán a Szentély két oszlopára, Jákinra és Boázra emlékeztető oszlopokból hal-farkú, sas-csőrű, kígyószerű lények nőnek ki, köztük pedig kerek gránátalma motívum. A kötetben közel egy évtizedig vezették az adományokkal kapcsolatos feljegyzéseket, a következő kötet 1832.ben indul.

Description

Az 1820-as évekre a pesti zsidó közösség már kiépítette szervezetét, mely a sokféle joghátrányban élő közösség életét szabályozta és igazgatta. A zsidó község életére vonatkozó döntéseket az elöljáróság hozta, melyben a korszak legtekintélyesebb – azaz legtanultabb és/vagy leggazdagabb - tagjai foglaltak helyet. Hetente üléseztek, és döntéseik eredményét jegyzőkönyvekben rögzítették. A jegyzőkönyveket eleinte még héber betűkkel írták, majd fokozatosan áttértek a gótbetűs német, majd a latin betűs magyar szövegezésre. Az 1828-ban kezdett jegyzőkönyvet két példányban vezették, melyek szóról szóra megegyeznek egymással, eltérés csupán írásmódjukban van: az egyik kötetet héber betűkkel, a másikat már gót betűkkel, mindkettőt németül, a német helyesírás korabeli szabályait betartva. Feltehetően ebben az időpontban a még csak héberül, illetve a már németül is író-olvasó elöljárók nagyjából kiegyenlítetten voltak jelen az elöljáróságban, ezért volt szükség a párhuzamos jegyzőkönyvezésre. A kötetek címlapja még héber, melyen a pirossal kiemelt betűk számértéke adja a dátumot. A címet a korszak biedermeier divatjának megfelelő, de a népművészet virágaira is emlékeztető rózsaág keretezi.

Jóllehet a művészet története bővelkedik az első emberpár ábrázolásában, a szemérmes zsidó vizuális világban ez mégis ritka. A várpalotai hevra kadisa 1837-ben készített jegyzőkönyvének címlapján mégis ezt, a bűnbeesés jelenetét látjuk úgy, ahogyan azt egy dunántúli zsidó közösségben elképzelték. A vizuális megfogalmazásból nyilvánvaló, hogy a rajzoló jól ismerte a tórai szöveget és néhány kommentárt is, de a közép-európai táj is hatással volt rá. A tudás fája nála egyértelműen egy szép piros almákat termő almafa, ennek gyümölcsét láthatjuk Ádám és Éva kezében is, de a felettük összetekeredve jelen lévő kígyó szájában is. Elsőre talán meglepő, hogy Ádám és Éva mennyire hasonlóak, de Ádám a teremtésekor még mindkét nemet képviselte: nő és férfi is volt egyszerre. Hogy mégis ő Ádám, azt a zsidó művészet “folytatólagos előadás”-ként leírt jellegzetességéből is tudhatjuk. Ezek szerint a zsidó vizuális világ nem kimerevített, a bálványimádás veszélyét rejtő jeleneteket ábrázol, hanem szinte rajzfilmszerűen egész történeteket, nem ritkán az isteni beavatkozás történetével együtt. Így olvasva a mi történetünk a lap tetején kezdődik: a kígyó szájában ott a kísértést jelentő gyümölcs, melyet továbbad Évának, aki továbbadja azt Ádámnak - ezért van mindkettejük kezében ott az alma. A történet további része ismert - ezt már nem láthatjuk a képen. Láthatjuk viszont az előzményeket, a paradicsomi állapotokat, amikor a vadállatok (oroszlán), és a legelésző állatok (itt most: szarvas) békésen éltek együtt az Édenkertben. Esetünkben ez nem pusztán a hajdani és a remélt majdani Paradicsomra utal, hanem a jegyzőkönyvet készíttető egylet elöljáróira is: Mose Wolf (farkas) Freudenbergre, és Avraham Hirs (szarvas) Schwarczra. Azt, hogy nem csak a jeles férfiak neveit jelenítette meg a rajzoló, hanem a rajzzal invokálja a Messiás eljövetelét követően remélt harmóniát is, a dátumjelzéshez választott bibliaidézet erősíti. A mondatban a megjelölt betűk számértéke alapján kapjuk meg a dátumot (1837) - és persze ennél jóval többet: a kép és a szöveg összeolvasásával a várpalotai zsidók reményeit: “Akkor azok közül, akik a föld porában alszanak, sokan felébrednek: némelyek örök életre, mások pedig, hogy örök gyalázatot lássanak” (Dániel 12:2)

Bonyhádon már a 18. században tekintélyes hitközség működött, melynek emléke a levéltár állományában lévő több kötetnyi 18-19. századi bonyhádi jegyzőkönyv. A közösség jelentős részének kiirtását követően a hazatértek 1949-re újraalapították a neológ és az ortodox hitközséget is, s a visszatértek a 108 tagú neológ közösség elpusztult tagjainak nevét – a memorbuchok középkori gyakorlatát követve – emlékkönyvben rögzítették. A kötet borítása és papírja alapján egy 19. század közepéről üresen megmaradt jegyzőkönyvet használtak fel erre a célra. A munkaszolgálatban elhunytak névsorát bevezető lapon a héber szöveg negyedik sorában héber betűkkel, de magyarul írják a munkaszolgálat szót, mert nem találtak megfelelő kifejezést a héber nyelvben. A szöveg alatti kép arra utal, hogy a jegyzőkönyvet készítő ismerte a koncentrációs táborok és munkaszolgálatos tömegsírok feltárása során a készített fényképeket.

A nagykanizsai hevra kadisa 1769 és 1793 között vezetett jegyzőkönyvébe ezek mellett bemásolták a halottak eltakarításával foglalkozó kortárs művek egy részét is. A széfer hasszidim című mű pokolról szóló traktátusának szövegét tíz, a halott körüli szolgálatokat és a bűnös lélek megtisztulását ábrázoló figurális ábrázolás egészíti ki. A rajzok élethűen ábrázolják a tizennyolcadik század végének magyarországi zsidó viseletét csakúgy, mint a kortárs elképzeléseket a pokolról, az angyalokról, vagy akár a tisztító tűzről. A figurális jelenetek mellett a kötet mind a kétszázkilencvenkilenc lapjának széle gazdagon díszített. Az illusztrációkat a kaboldi Jicchak Eizik készítette, akinek több nyugat-magyarországi illusztrált kötete ismert.
