Kohn Sámuel a híres bajai rabbi, Kohn Schwerin Götz unokájaként született 1841-ben. A kismartoni és a pápai jesívák után rabbiképesítését a korszak modern zsidó tudományosságának egyik fellegvárában, a breslaui rabbiképzőben szerezte. 1866-ban választották meg a Dohány utcai zsinagóga rabbijának, ahol ő vezette be a magyar nyelvű prédikációkat. 1884-ben jelentette meg „A zsidók története Magyarországon” című munkáját, melyben újszerű elméletet állított fel: e szerint a magyarországi zsidók a nyolcadik században egy évszázadnyi időre zsidó hitre tért kazárok leszármazottai, akik „mózesvallású magyarokként” a honfoglaló magyarsággal egyszerre érkeztek a Kárpát-medencébe. A kazár rokonság elméletét tudományos körökben már megjelenésének évében megcáfolták, de az erőteljesen asszimilálódó magyarországi zsidó közösségben mégis nagyon népszerű lett. A gyökértelenséggel vádolt zsidó közösség előszeretettel hivatkozott Kohn elméletére, jóllehet a magyarországi zsidó közösségek története nem folyamatos: a középkori előzmények után a török hódoltság időszakában, majd a tizennyolcadik századi újratelepítés során a zsidó lakosság többször kicserélődött. Elmélete a későbbi történetíróknál is megjelent, s szinte máig meghatározza a magyar zsidók történeti tudatát. Kohn Sámuel történetíróként jelentőset alkotott: összegyűjtötte a magyar történelemre vonatkozó héber forrásokat, és ő írt először magyar zsidó régiségekről, a zsidó történeti források összegyűjtésének és megőrzésének szükségességéről. Vezetésével állították össze azt a kiállítást, mely 1896-ban, Magyarország ezeréves fennállásának ünnepére rendezett Ezredéves Kiállításon elsőként mutatta be a magyarországi zsidók tárgyi–történeti emlékeit. Ennek a gyűjtésnek egy kis töredéke lett a húsz évvel később megnyílt zsidó múzeum törzsanyaga. Szobrát a jeles zsidó szobrász, a szintén Bajáról származó Telcs Ede készítette el a múzeum felkérésére, Kohn fiának anyagi támogatásával. Telcs a korszak elismert művésze volt. Ő készítette egyebek mellett a nemzeti romantika költőjének, Vörösmarty Mihálynak szobrát csakúgy, mint a Hősök terén álló emlékművön Szent László király alakját. A zsidó múzeum megrendelésére a híres 19. századi rabbi, Löw Lipót és a magyar nyelvű zsidó költészet jelese, Kiss József szobrát is elkészítette. Kohn Sámuel szobra 1936-ben a Kongresszusi kiállításon volt először látható, majd azóta folyamatosan az állandó kiállítás része. Mendel Jakab 1493 és 1522 között volt zsidó prefektus, gyakorlatilag a magyarországi zsidó közösség vezetője. A prefektus tisztségét Mátyás király vezette be a zsidó közösség és a királyság közötti kapcsolattartás céljára, de a prefektusnak széleskörű jogai voltak a közösségen belül is. A tisztségre a zsidó közösség egy tagját nevezték ki, ellentétben a korábbi gyakorlattal, amikor a zsidók jogi képviselete egy keresztény főúr feladata volt. Mendel Jakab okleveleit saját, címerével és arcképével díszített pecsétjével hitelesítette, ami egyedülálló volt a korabeli európai gyakorlatban. A zsidó múzeum az 1930-as években másolatot szerzett a kassai levéltárban lévő, eredeti pecséttel ellátott Mendel oklevélről. A pecsétrajz alapján készült 1935-ben, az Országos Gyűlés alkalmából a plakett. Előlapján Jakab Mendel héber betűs névmonogramja és címere látható magyar nyelvű körirattal, hátlapján pedig a pecsétrajza alapján hitelesnek tekintett portréja héber nyelvű köriratban. A felirat magyarul és héberül is: Izraelita Országos Gyűlés emlékére, Magyar Zsidó Múzeum, 1935. A gyűlésen egyebek mellett a központi zsidó vezetés kérdéseit kívánták megtárgyalni. A neológ közösségek országos szervezete 1868-ban állt fel a Zsidó Kongresszus alkalmával, melyről az ortodox képviselők kivonultak, és amely végül a magyarországi zsidó közösség szervezeti szakadásához vezetett. A Zsidó Múzeum 1935-ben a Mendelek szerepének hangsúlyozásával történelmi legitimitást próbált adni a központi vezetésnek. A plakettet a mindössze huszonnégy éves, tehetséges fiatal ötvös, Örkényi Strasser István készítette. A plakettből több példány készült, egyes példányai a múzeumban megvásárolhatóak voltak, s ellenértékük a gyűjteményt gazdagította. Title A name given to the resource Becalél plakett Description An account of the resource Becalél plakett A politikai cionizmus gondolatával párhuzamosan a zsidó nemzeti gondolat a kulturális élet területén is megjelent. Ekkoriban indult a héber nyelvújító mozgalom, melynek eredményeképpen az évszázadokon keresztül a szakrális szférába visszahúzódó héber nyelv újra beszélt nyelvvé vált. A nemzeti művészeti megteremtésének kísérlete egybeesett az európai szecessziós mozgalmakkal, és elméleti és stíluskérdésekben is nagy hatást gyakorolt rá. A cionista nemzeti művészet kialakítására egy fiatal bevándorló művészekből álló csoport 1906-ban Jeruzsálemben létrehozta a Becalél Művészeti Akadémiát. Az intézet nevét Becalélról, a salamoni szentély építőmesteréről kapta, aki a zsidó művészet első alakja volt, s aki amellett, hogy a kellő mesterségbeli tudása volt, istentől eredő elhivatottsággal is rendelkezett. A Becalél Akadémia megálmodója, szellemi és művészeti vezetője egy bolgár–zsidó szobrász, Boris Schatz volt. Az ő elképzelései szerint alakították ki a részlegeket, melyekben egy-egy kézműves iparág oktatása folyt. Követendő szempont volt, hogy a termékek nyersanyaga helybeli, Izraeli anyag legyen és lehessen háziipari körülmények között is művelni. A Becalélon a szecessziós összművészet (azaz Gesamtkunstwerk) jegyében az új zsidó életforma minden szükséges tárgyát igyekeztek művészi kivitelben megtervezni és előállítani. Az előállított termékek jelentős része hétköznapi használati tárgy volt: szőnyegek, bútorok és edények, a többi pedig dísztárgy. A tárgyak stílusának kialakításánál a cionista eszmények által diktált stiláris elemeket használták. Ezek kialakításához gyűjtötték a tradicionális zsidó kézműves termékeket, és azok mintakincsét aktualizálva és új elemekkel bővítve alakították ki a jellegzetes, szecessziós Becalél stílust. Mintakincsükben elsősorban a héber betűk és az izraeli növények, állatok, tájképek részletei domináltak. Theodor Herzlnek, a modern politikai cionizmus megálmodójának profilja korai halála után nagyon hamar ikonikus szimbólumává vált a tárgyaknak. Herzl emlékplakettjét a Becalél vezető művésze, Boris Schatz készítette el bronzból. A budapesti Zsidó Múzeum 1936-ban felvette a kapcsolatot a Becalél Akadémiával, ami igazi szellemi áttörésnek számított, hiszen a magyarországi zsidó közösség hagyományosan anticionista volt. A Herzl plakettet 1936-ban, műtárgycserével szerezte meg gyűjteménye számára a Magyar Zsidó Múzeum.
