Május 3-án Izrael Állam megalakulásának 50. évfordulóján a Magyar - Izraeli Baráti Társaság ünnepséget rendezett a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia Dísztermében. Ünnepi beszédet mondott Göncz Árpád köztársasági elnök és Joel Alon Izrael Állam magyarországi nagykövete. Az ünnepséget a Magyar Televízió is közvetítette. Bokor Péter „Nehéz föld” című dokumentumfilmjének levetítése után Raphael Vágó Erec és a Galut kapcsolatát elemezte, Peter Haber a pozsonyi első cionista kongresszus jelentőségéről beszélt, Siró Béla a palesztinai jisuv első világháború előtti korszakáról beszélt. Toronyi Zsuzsa a Magyar Zsidó Levéltárban őrzött palesztinai képeslapokat vetített a két háború közötti időszakból. Az első nap estéjén ünnepi hangversenyt rendeztek a Dohány utcai templomban Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Mozart, Mendelssohn és Goldmark műveiből. A második napon Gerő András „A nemzetisten és a zsidók” címmel, Ferenczi László „Menahim Begin emlékiratairól” tartott előadást, Kiss József az ortodoxia és a cionizmus kapcsolatáról, Ambrus Katalin egy cionista regényről, Arthur Koestler „Mint éjjeli tolvaj” című művéről beszélt. A második nap végén Schőner Alfréd kerekasztal-beszélgetést szervezett a zsidó ifjúsági szervezetek küldötteivel. Május 16-án függetlenségi ünnepet rendeztek Kiskunhalason.
