At birth, I was given the name Linda Clara Margaret Livia Ambrus. I don’t know why I was given three middle names. My three older siblings were given just one. My parents changed course with me. The siblings who followed also received three middle names. Clara, of course, was after my mother. I recall when, at age 4 or 5, Grandmother Bözsi proudly told me that Livia was for her sister, Lili. Margaret was for her mother, Margit. I had never given those names much thought. But now, I think of them as a mysterious gift. Like a fairy tale spell that would take hold in some distant, unforeseeable future. That future arrived with a jolt when I was possessed by the need to know those whose names I had inherited. And understand the truth of where I came from. Over thirty-five years ago, I discovered that I am not who I thought I was. It took this long to muster the courage and determination to embark on a journey of discovery. This story has unfolded over many years. Often in fits and starts. Sometimes opening up, sometimes slowing to what seemed a dead end. It changed as new information was discovered or as different people entered the story. There are the gaps when I cannot find witnesses. I tried to reinforce the story with research. It was Zsigmond’s legacy to finish our family history that he started. And so, it is our duty to pick up a quill and continue with the utmost respect where he left off. Perhaps it is his quill I inherited. I respectfully pick it up and search for the truth of my ancestors by bringing their stories back into the light. I hope to learn of their lives. Margit megörökölte gettóban éhenhalt apja ingatlanait, kifizette az örökösödési adót, és helyreállíttatta a háborús károsodásokat. De a kommunista rezsim Margitot és sok hozzá hasonló sorsú polgárt burzsoá kapitalistának, a nép ellenségének tartotta. Büntetésképpen még azt is megtiltották, hogy a fővárosban lakjanak. Margitot és vele élő megözvegyült lányát, Bözsit Nagyrédére, egy távoli faluba telepítették ki. Mindössze huszonnégy órát kaptak arra, hogy értékeiket összecsomagolják – amit nem tudtak magukkal vinni, azt az államhatalom eltulajdonította. A faluban folyamatos rendőri felügyelet alatt álltak. Ide, a faluba kézbesítették a hivatalos végzést arról, hogy Teréz körúti házát és Svábhegyi nyaralót is államosították. Még az utcaneveket is megváltoztatták: a Teréz körút már Lenin körútként szerepelt a dokumentumokban. Margit és Bözsi csak 1953-ban, Sztálin halálát követően költözhettek vissza Budapestre, ahol egy kétszobás lakást bérelhettek az eredeti otthonuk helyén. Egyetlen vágyuk az maradt, hogy gyermekeik után mehessenek: el Magyarországról, a szabad világba. Sosem kaptak útlevelet, a rendszer foglyaiként éltek. A szabadulást az 1956-os forradalom hozta el, ekkor Bözsi kivándorolt, de Margit, aki akkor már nyolcvan éves volt és beteges, maradni kényszerült. Szerény nyugdíját nyelvleckék adásával egészítette ki amíg csak tudta. Másik lánya, Lili ápolta haláláig. Bözsi Amerikába ment, Gyulával és annak családjával élt Buffalóban. Soha többet nem beszéltek a múltról, sem az átélt borzalmakról, sem a gazdag családtörténetről, és szót sem ejtettek a család zsidó gyökereiről. Gyula gyermekei már nem tanultak meg magyarul, és semmit sem sejthettek a családjuk történetéről. Bözsi alkalmazkodott, ő sem mesélt semmit. Még akkor sem, amikor Bayer Klára 2011-ben Világ Igazai kitüntetésben részesült. Ezt a magas rangú izraeli kitüntetést azok kaphatják meg, akik a Holokauszt idején zsidókat mentettek. Zsidókat, csak azt nem árulták el senkinek, hogy Gyulát is Klára bújtatta. Még ugyanabban az évben tűz ütött ki a családi házban. A helyreállítás során Linda és nővére, Madeleine egy rejtélyes dobozt találtak a pincében. A doboz tele volt számukra érthetetlen nyelven, magyarul írt levelekkel, anyakönyvi iratokkal, fényképekkel. Gyula még ekkor sem nyílt meg, de az Ambrus lányok kutatásba kezdtek, melynek nyomán feltárult a családtörténet. And with his passion for poetry, why not tell us about Elvira Mihelfy, and Bella Rosenfeld and Sándor Bródy? Those stories would require no fabrication or exaggeration. My father embodied many of his family’s ideals. I feel blessed to have this extraordinary Jewish history and legacy. It gave me a sense of belonging. Like the seeds that my great great grandfather Ignácz Misner planted for his beloved trees, I was meant to be. I had roots.
