Part of the Ottoman Empire until 1917, the Holy Land came under British mandate. At first, the British supported the establishment of a Jewish homeland and authorized Jewish immigration (‘Aliyah’ in Hebrew). In this period several thousand (mostly European) Jews settled in Eretz Israel (Land of Israel) and started a programme of draining marshes and turning the desert into arable land, building a new social and economic model in the Middle East. Arab nationalists looked on this with hostility. In August 1929, part of the Arab population of the Old City attacked the Jewish community, which had been living there for centuries, with knives and sticks. The pogrom spread to other places. Many Jews were killed or forced to flee their own homes. Jewish communities protested world-wide. The demonstration of the Hungarian Jewish community against this persecution took place in a symbolic venue, the building formerly housing the Lower House of Parliament in Sándor (today Bródy Sándor) Street. More than ten thousand Jews lived in Mukachevo, they made up nearly half of the city’s population. Though the overwhelming majority were Orthodox and Hassidic Jews, secular Zionism also appeared in the city. In 1925, Chaim Kugel, one of the leaders of the Jewish Party of Czechoslovakia, opened the only Hebrew high school in the country that provided secular education and was open to girls as well. Classes were taught in modern literary Hebrew; and the education at the school was approved by the state. The school, which had to struggle with the fierce resistance of the Hasidic rabbis, did not prepare his students for aliya (immigration to Israel), but sought to foster self-conscious Jewish intellectuals for local communities. Following the annexation of the area to Hungary, anti-Jewish provisions disrupted the Hebrew language training.
