A judaizmusban imádkozás közben a hajdani Szentély, a zsidó nép örök fővárosa, Jeruzsálem felé fordul a közösség. A sivviti tábla a jeruzsálemi, azaz keleti irány meghatározására és megjelölésére szolgál.
A zsinagógák berendezésének jellegzetes, a zsidó népművészetet jellemző darabjai a sivviti táblák. Nevüket a rajtuk szereplő zsoltáridézet kezdő szaváról kapták: „Sivviti Adonáj …. Az Örökkévalót mindig magam előtt tartottam” (Zsoltárok könyve, 16:8) A papírkivágás a 18-19. században lett népszerű a zsidó közösségekben, elsősorban a lengyel és a galíciai területeken. Ezzel a technikával elsősorban férfiak dolgoztak, jesiva-bóherek, melammedek és tanítványaik.
A sivviti különösen szép példája a papírkivágásoknak. Különlegessége, hogy az általános gyakorlattal szemben nem színezett, a fehéren hagyott papír gazdag csipkemintát ad ki, melyben szinte kizárólag a héber betűk dominálnak. Feliratai a zsinagógákban és zsinagógai tárgyakon gyakori mondatok, elsősorban zsoltár-idézetek. Felül középen kezdődik a frigyszekrényeken is gyakori felirat: „Napkeltétől napnyugtáig dicsérve legyen az Örökkévaló neve”. A zsoltárvers két vázából kiindulva félkörívesen veszi körül a lap középpontjában lévő, legnagyobb betűkkel írt négybetűs istennevet. A lap tetején nagy betűkkel kiemelve a zsoltárvers első szava „Mizrah” = kelet utal egyben a tárgytípus másik funkciójára, az ima keleti irányának jelölésére. A tábla négy sarkában Jeruzsálemre és Cionra utaló zsoltáridézetek, az egyéb mondatszalagokban az Örökkévaló segítségét kérő idézetek szerepelnek. A betűk mellett gazdag növényi ornamentika, valamint két-két szarvas és oroszlán alakja díszíti a sivviti táblát.

A zsinagógák berendezésének jellegzetes, a zsidó népművészetet jellemző darabjai a sivviti táblák. A sivviti táblák az előimádkozó pultját díszítik úgy, hogy az imádkozás során kelet felé forduló előimádkozó egyben a tábla felé is fordul. A táblák nevüket a rajtuk szereplő zsoltáridézetről kapták. A 16. zsoltár 8 verse szerepel rajtuk mely így szól: „Sivviti Adonáj lönagdi tamid” azaz „Az Örökkévalót mindig magam előtt tartottam”.
A sivviti táblák általában gazdagon díszítettek. Díszítésüknek olyannak kell lennie, ami az előimádkozó figyelmét a zsidó értékekre összepontosítja, s ezzel is segíti az imádkozás közbeni elmélyedést.
Jellemzőek a mikrográfiás ábrázolások, amikor a szent szövegeket nagyon apró betűkkel írva különféle absztrakt, növényi, állati vagy emberi figurákká rendezi az írnok. A műfaj kialakulását elősegítette, hogy a második parancsolat figurális ábrázolást tiltó rendelkezéseinek szigorú értelmezése szerint más módon nem lehet teremtett dolgokat ábrázolni. A mikrográfia a szent szövegek lapszéli magyarázó jegyzeteiből alakult önálló műfajjá. A mikrografikus szövegekből összeállított bibliai jelenetek, szimbólumok, vagy akár portrék a 18. századtól jelentek meg zsinagógai vagy otthoni díszekként.
Mordeháj ben Eliezer megyeri kántor sivviti táblájára a Zsoltárok, valamint az öt tekercs: az Énekek Éneke, a Rúth könyve, a Siralmak könyve, a Prédikátor könyve és az Eszter könyve teljes szövegét írta fel. Az oszlopokkal tagolt felület három tympononban végződő, épületre emlékeztető dísze a Zsoltárok könyvének szövegéből áll. Ugyancsak a zsoltárok könyve formálja a hárfával ábrázolt Dávid király alakját, valamint a Jákov álma jelenetet. Az oszlopok által tagolt mezőkben az öt tekercs szövege egy–egy bibliai szereplő formájában jelenik meg: az alsó sorban balra Salamon király az Énekek Énekének, jobbra pedig Ruth, Ruth könyvének betűiből. Felettük baloldalon Eszter az Eszter–könyvéből, illetve jobbra újra Salamon a Prédikátor könyvének betűiből. A Jákov álmának jelenetével egy magasságban, a baloldalon található boríték–forma tartalmazza a Siralmak könyvének szövegét. A tábla alsó-középső részén egy, a bibliai leírásnak megfelelően bimbó és virágformákból álló menóra alakja látható. A lap tetején, a timpanonok között két, tóratekercset tartó madár alakja.

A siviti táblák általában gazdagon díszítettek. Díszítésüknek olyannak kell lennie, ami az előimádkozó figyelmét a zsidó értékekre összpontosítja, s ezzel is segíti az imádkozás közbeni elmélyedést. Jellemzőek a mikrográfiás ábrázolások, amikor a szent szövegeket nagyon apró betűkkel írva különféle absztrakt, növényi, állati vagy emberi figurákká rendezi az írnok. Leibrich Leeb Austerlitzben készített siviti táblája azonban szakít a hagyománnyal és megjelennek az emberalakok, a zsoltáridézeteket pedig az épületet díszítőelemeinek használja. A bal felső medalionban látható Áron főpapi ruhában, a jobb oldalon pedig Mózes a kőtáblákkal. Közöttük pedig az erkélyen hárfán játszó Dávid király, valamint Jákov álma jelenete rajzolódik ki.
The Shiviti plaques are placed above the podium from which the prayer service is lead in a way that the hazzan (cantor) faces the plaque when facing east during prayer. These plaques received their name from the Biblical verse inscribed on them. Verse 8 of Psalm 16 says: Shiviti Adonay le-negdi tamid, “I have set the Lord always before me”. Shiviti plaques are usually elaborately decorated. Its decoration had to draw the attention of the cantor to Jewish values, and thus help him with concentration and immersion in prayer. Micrographic designs are typical elements on Shiviti plaques: the scribe writes holy texts with tiny characters in a way that they depict various abstract patterns, flowers, animals or human figures. The shiviti plaque of Leibrich Leeb made in Austerlitz, however, breaks with the tradition and the human figures appear, and the psalms rendered as decorative elements on the façade of the building. In the upper left medallion, High Priest Aaron is visible, while on the right one Moses with the stone tablets. Among them in a rectangular form one can discern scenes of King David playing on the harp, and Jacob’s dream.

A zsinagógákban az előimádkozó pult előtt a keleti irányt jelöli és a imára való öszpontosítást segíti a siviti tábla. Nevét a rajta szereplő zsoltáridézet kezdő szaváról kapta: „Siviti Adonáj …. Az Örökkévalót mindig magam előtt tartottam” (Zsolt 16:8). A pergamen lapra írt siviti táblán a nagyobb betűkkel írt zsoltár–idézet mellett számos egyéb, mára olvashatatlanná kopott szöveg nyomai is látszanak. Látszik, hogy az egész táblán több blokkban elhelyezett szövegek voltak, s a két nagyobb szöveg–hasáb között a menóra alakban írt zsoltár is felsejlik. A sivviti tábla a zsidó szakrális célra használt szöveg–tárgyak jellegzetes kopási folyamatát mutatja: a pergamenről szinte teljesen lekopott a tinta, a pergamen pedig zsugorodott. A mezuzát, a tfillint és a tóratekercset azért kell rendszeresen ellenőriztetni, mert ezek a sérülések a tárgyat nem kóserrá, paszullá teszik. A siviti táblát a több értékes tárgyat ajándékozó Eisenstaedter Ödön ajándékozta a múzeumnak 1929–ben. A tárgy eredeti leltári száma az idők során elmosódott, a rendelkezésünkre álló forrásokból nem kideríthető.
