A tfilint a hétköznap reggeli imához helyezik fejükre és kezükre a felnőtt zsidó férfiak. A szófer által írt pergamendarabokat marhabőrből készített kocka alakú tokokba helyezik, melyekhez hosszú szíjak csatlakoznak. A tokok és a szíjak fejre és kézre illesztését szigorú előírások szabályozzák. A tfilinek védelmére gyakran papírból vagy akár fémből készült tokokat készítenek, melyek használaton kívül védik a rituális imakellékeket. A tfilin tárolására, szállítására hagyományosan hímzett tfilin-zacskókat készítettek, de természetesen ebből is készültek egyszerűbb darabok is. A huszadik század elején, Jeruzsálemben készült pamutvászon tfilin-zacskón a tfilin felhelyezésekor elmondandó áldások és a tfilin szabályai olvashatóak. Valamennyi szöveg és dísz azokkal a nyomóklisékkel készült, melyeket az imakönyvek, térképek vagy akár képeslapok nyomtatásánál használtak, és a szövegek elhelyezése is az imakönyvek gyakorlatára emlékeztet. A tfilinzacskó másik felén a jeruzsálemi nyomda további kliséiből készült összeállítás látható. A kompozíció közepén a menóra zsoltár, mellette kétoldalt pedig 4-4 szentföldi látnivalót ábrázoló ovális kis medaillon látható. A menóra alatt olvashatjuk a készítő nyomdász, Avraham Mose Luncz nevét. Luncz a cári Oroszországból tizenöt évesen, 1869-ben költözött Jeruzsálembe, ahol tudósként, szerkesztőként lett ismert. Munkássága azokra az évekre esik, amikor az első alija keretében több mint 50000 új bevándorló érkezett az addig gyéren lakott sivatagi területre. Új városokat építettek, Eliezer ben Jehuda kidolgozta a modern héber nyelv alapjait, és létrehozták az új ország első intézményeit. A tfilinzacskóra nyomtatott képek között már új településeket is láthatunk, a Rothschild báró adományából 1882-ben alapított Rison LeCiont és Zikhron Jákovot, valamint a Haifai kikötőt.
