A tradicionális zsidó képtilalom miatt legmegfelelőbbnek és a zsidó írásos tradícióval leginkább összeilleszthetőnek a héber betűkből kialakított ornamensek alkalmazását tekintették. Ezzel árhuzamosan dolgozott Magyarországon a szegedi származású Seelenfreund Salamon grafikus, aki szintén a héber betűkből alkotott díszítéseket. Theodor Herzl halálakor (1904) tervezett emlék képeslapja a zsidó tradíció ősi elemeit a korszak legmodernebb stíluselemeivel. A fehér sztélé-sírkövön Herzl héber neve, mellette a héber betűk elemeiből összeállított menóra és növényi inda motívumok. Seelenferund elkötelezett cionista volt, ő tervezte a magyarországi cionista mozgalom kiadványainak egy részét is.
